Chapter 7 - The Collapse

I returned to the ballroom just as the lights dimmed. The room was expectant, the air thick with anticipation. Dominic took the stage, the spotlight washing over him, highlighting the veneer of success he had cultivated.
“Friends, colleagues, partners,” he began, his voice booming and confident. “Tonight is about looking toward the future. We’ve faced challenges, we’ve endured hardships, but we’ve never wavered.”
I stood in the shadows by the side of the stage, watching him lie. Behind me, Julian was waiting in a van outside, ready to hit the ‘upload’ button on the evidence I had just secured.
“And I want to thank my wife, Evelyn,” he continued, gesturing toward me. The crowd turned, applauding. “She is the rock that has kept me grounded through the darkest of times.”
The irony was so sharp it almost made me laugh. I stepped out of the shadows, walking toward the center of the stage. Dominic’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, confusion flashing across his face.
“Evelyn? What are you doing?”
I didn't answer him. I walked to the audio technician’s booth. I had already warned the staff that I would be making a "surprise announcement" and had tipped them well enough to ensure they wouldn't stop me.
I plugged my device into the sound system.
“Dominic,” I said into the microphone, my voice echoing throughout the ballroom, clear and cold as ice. “You’ve always loved surprises. Let’s show everyone what you’ve been working on behind our backs.”
I hit the button.
A massive screen behind the podium flickered to life. Instead of the polished promotional video he had prepared, the screen filled with the documents I had gathered.
Bank statements. The "secondary contingency" contract for my removal. Emails between Dominic and Natalie mocking our marriage. The entire, sordid history of his theft and his betrayal.
The silence that followed was deafening. It was a vacuum, sucking the air out of the room. Dominic stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing, his face turning an ashen gray. The senators, the investors, the elite—they all stood in shock, their phones out, snapping photos of the evidence before their eyes.
Then, the doors to the ballroom burst open. Not by security, but by federal agents.
“Dominic Sterling,” a voice rang out, cutting through the murmurs. “You are under arrest for fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit murder.”
The chaos was instantaneous. The crowd erupted into shouts, cameras flashed, and the veneer of the perfect marriage, the perfect life, the perfect man—it all shattered at once.
I watched as the agents moved toward him, the handcuffs clicking shut around his wrists. He looked at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and, finally, true fear.

I didn't look away. I stood there, tall and unyielding, watching as the man who had tried to erase me was erased by the truth. Natalie was nowhere to be seen, having fled the moment the screens lit up.
The collapse was complete. And as the flashbulbs continued to fire, I felt a strange, beautiful sensation: for the first time in my life, I was finally, truly, free.
