Chapter 10 - The New Dawn

Six months later, the Grand Regent looked different. The marble was still there, the luxury was still there, but the feel of the place had changed. There were photos of families in the lobby, murals dedicated to local history, and a playground near the courtyard where children laughed throughout the day.

I stood at the front desk, not as a ragged traveler, but as the man who had reclaimed his life. I was wearing a simple sweater and slacks, looking more like a father than an executive.

Elena walked by, stopping to wave at Lily, who was busy drawing at a nearby table. Lily was smiling—a real, bright smile that reached her eyes. She had friends now, and she wasn't afraid of the hotel anymore.

My phone buzzed—an invitation to a global summit on ethical business practices. I looked at it for a moment, then set it aside. My work in the corporate office was necessary, but it wasn't my life anymore.

I walked over to Lily and leaned down. "Ready to go home, princess?"

She gathered her drawings—pictures of a garden, a rabbit, and a man holding a little girl’s hand. "Can we come back tomorrow?"

"Whenever you want," I said. "It’s our home, after all."

As we walked out through the grand entrance, the doorman—a young man who had been struggling to find work before I hired him—held the door open with a genuine smile. I didn't need to be the "owner" to feel powerful. I was a father, I was a man who had faced his demons, and for the first time in a long time, the road ahead was wide open, paved with nothing but potential.

The Grand Regent stood tall behind us, a monument not to wealth, but to the truth. And as we walked into the Chicago sunlight, I knew that Sarah would have been proud. We had finally reached the ending we deserved.
