Chapter 7 - The Web Unravels

While Savannah recovered, the state investigation expanded into the medical network that had enabled Gavin and Priscilla’s horrifying scheme.
Dr. Arthur Vance’s medical license was permanently revoked within forty-eight hours of his arrest. Under questioning by federal prosecutors, Vance confessed that Gavin had paid him fifty thousand dollars in cash—funneled through an offshore shell company—to sign the provisional death certificate without performing a physical post-mortem examination.
Furthermore, federal investigators uncovered that Dr. Vance had participated in similar fraudulent death certifications for elderly patients whose estates were subsequently looted by predatory relatives.
“It was a ring,” Detective Cole told Rosalind during a brief update in the hospital hallway. “Gavin and Vance weren't operating in a vacuum. We’ve unmasked three other families in the Twin Cities area who used Vance to fake medical deaths for insurance payouts and inheritance fraud over the last five years.”
“Will they be caught?” Rosalind asked, her arms crossed tightly over her chest.

“Every single one of them,” Cole promised. “Your granddaughter’s survival blew the lid off a massive, underground white-collar murder ring. What Gavin and Priscilla did wasn't just domestic abuse—it was an enterprise.”
The scope of the betrayal made Rosalind’s stomach churn. The people she had shared holiday dinners with, the son she had raised, had turned into monsters driven entirely by greed. But sitting inside Room 312, watching Savannah laugh at a cartoon on the television screen, Rosalind knew that evil had failed. Love, instinct, and a grandmother’s unwillingness to say a final goodbye had shattered their empire of lies.
