CHAPTER 2: The Whisper Behind the Glass

Mercy General Hospital was too bright for a place where children were dying.

The fluorescent lights made everything feel colder, harsher.

I ran through the hallway until a nurse stopped me.

“Mr. Carter?”

“Yes! Where is she?!”

“Room 3. But—sir, you need to prepare yourself.”

Prepare myself.

For what?

I didn’t wait for permission. I pushed past the doors.

And I saw her.

Emily was lying in the center of the bed, so small she looked swallowed by the white sheets. Machines beeped softly beside her. A tube ran near her arm.

But what destroyed me wasn’t the machines.

It was her hands.

Both of them were wrapped in thick bandages.

Burn dressings.

I stumbled forward, my throat tightening.

“No… no, no…”

A doctor stepped in quickly. “Sir, please—stay calm. She’s stable, but she has severe burns on both hands.”

“Burns?” I turned sharply. “How?”

The doctor hesitated.

“That’s… under investigation.”

Before I could ask anything else, Emily’s eyes fluttered open.

She saw me.

And she started crying immediately.

Not loudly.

Just silent tears rolling down her face, like she was too tired even to sob.

I rushed closer, holding her tiny uninjured arm.

“Emily… I’m here. Daddy’s here.”

Her lips trembled.

And then she whispered something that froze every drop of blood in my body.

“My stepmother… burned my hands…”

I pulled back instantly.

“What?”

Her voice was barely audible.

“She said… thieves deserve it…”

My heart stopped.

“Thieves? Emily, what are you talking about?”

Her eyes filled again.

“I was hungry… I only took bread…”

I felt like the ground beneath me disappeared.

Bread.

That word echoed in my head again and again.

Not money. Not toys.

Bread.

A child stealing bread because she was hungry.

Behind me, I heard the doctor shift uncomfortably, like he had already understood something I hadn’t fully accepted yet.

I turned slowly, my voice shaking.

“Where is Claire?”

May you like

No one answered immediately.

And that silence… was the first confirmation of a truth I wasn’t ready to face.
