Chapter 4 - The Ghost Town Return

Silver Creek had not aged well. The town was a skeletal version of its former self, its main street lined with boarded-up storefronts and the creeping rot of neglect. As we drove into town, I felt the familiar claustrophobia returning, the feeling that the trees were leaning in to watch us.

We checked into the only motel still operating, a place that smelled of damp carpet and stale cigarettes. Noah was quiet, his eyes scanning the streets with a hyper-vigilance that broke my heart.

"Stay close to me," I commanded, pulling him into the lobby.

We weren't here for nostalgia. We were here for the archives. My mother’s journal indicated that the original deeds to the land were hidden in a vault beneath the old town library—a building that had been slated for demolition for years but somehow always survived.

Under the cover of night, we slipped into the library. It was an echoing cavern of rotting paper and dust. I used my phone’s flashlight to navigate the labyrinthine aisles until I found the section marked 'Historical Records.'

Following the map in the journal, I found a loose floorboard near the fireplace. I pried it up, my fingernails digging into the splinters. There, nestled in a velvet-lined box, was the locket.

I opened it. Inside wasn't a picture. It was a microfiche slide.

"What is it?" Noah asked, his voice echoing in the stillness.

"Evidence," I said, holding it up to the light of my phone. I saw lines of text, names, dates, and a signature that belonged to the man who was currently the mayor of Silver Creek. "It’s the proof that they didn't just steal the land. They murdered everyone who tried to claim it."

Just as I tucked the slide into my pocket, a beam of light cut through the darkness of the library. Heavy boots crunched on the floorboards.

"I told you they'd find us," Noah whispered, his voice trembling.

I grabbed his hand. "Run."
