Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Office

Detective Vance and I arrived at the Connecticut estate just thirty minutes after leaving the hospital.

The sprawling colonial house looked quiet, elegant, and completely ordinary from the outside, wrapped in manicured hedges and a light dusting of morning snow. But knowing what happened inside those walls turned the beautiful architecture into a haunted mausoleum.

A black tactical SUV belonging to Gareth Vance, my head of security, was already parked in the circular driveway. Gareth stepped out as my car pulled up, his face grim and professional.

“Boss,” Gareth nodded, keeping his voice low. “We secured the perimeter. Nobody has entered or left since your call. The local deputies are ten minutes out, but I brought my digital forensics team inside.”

“Find everything, Gareth,” I commanded, stepping out into the freezing air. “Every financial record, every hidden phone, every security log. I want to know every single thing Lauren did in this house while I was away.”

Detective Vance flashed his badge at Gareth as we walked up the front steps. “Good to have professional backup, Mr. Barnes. Makes my job easier. Let’s sweep the master suite and the home office first.”

We pushed open the heavy oak front door. The foyer smelled faintly of bleach and lavender—the exact same sterile, masked scent that had covered up months of cruelty.

We headed straight to the second-floor executive office. This was Lauren’s domain. While I worked out of my Manhattan headquarters, Lauren managed the household accounts from this room, supposedly balancing budgets and charity donations.

Gareth was already inside, hunched over a sleek rosewood desk, plugging a portable decryption drive into Lauren’s custom desktop computer.

“Got past her password on the second try—she used her cat’s name,” Gareth muttered, tapping the keyboard. “And boss... you’re going to want to see this.”

I walked around the desk, leaning over Gareth’s shoulder.

On the screen was an open financial management dashboard. But it wasn't our family budget. It was an intricate web of offshore accounts, shell corporations, and wire transfers routed through the Cayman Islands.

“What am I looking at?” I asked, my chest tightening.

“Embezzlement, Mr. Barnes,” Detective Vance said, reading the screen over my shoulder. “Over the past eighteen months, Mrs. Barnes has systematically drained nearly 4.2 million dollars from your personal investment portfolios into accounts registered under a maiden name.”

I stared at the numbers. Four point two million dollars. She hadn't just been abusing my daughter; she had been systematically robbing me blind, preparing her escape hatch for the moment our marriage outlived its financial usefulness.

“There’s more,” Gareth said, clicking open a hidden folder labeled Household Rules.

A PDF document popped up on the screen. My breath caught in my throat as I read the title:

GRACE BARNES - DAILY COMPLIANCE PROTOCOL

It was a typed, highly detailed manual of psychological torture and domestic abuse.

Rule 1: No speaking unless directly addressed by Mrs. Barnes.

Rule 2: Meals restricted to bread and water if chores are incomplete.

Rule 3: Physical correction (hot press application) authorized for disobedience, crying, or mentioning father’s name in a complaining manner.

Rule 4: All communication devices confiscated. Isolation enforced.

Every nightmare I had ever feared was right there in black and white, executed with cold, corporate efficiency by the woman I had trusted to be a mother to my motherless child.

“My God,” Detective Vance whispered, taking off his hat and running a hand through his hair. “This isn’t just abuse, Mr. Barnes. This is systematic imprisonment.”

“She’s not getting away with this,” I said, my voice dropping into a register so dark and cold that Gareth and the detective both looked up at me. “Gareth, where is her personal phone?”

“On the kitchen island,” Gareth replied instantly. “She must have dropped it when she panicked and bolted from the house.”

“Bring it here,” I ordered.
