Chapter 3 - The Bloodline Verified

By midnight, the private wing of Vanderbilt University Medical Center was under complete lockdown.

Ethan Cole had called in every resource at his disposal. Armed private security officers stood guard at every elevator and corridor exit. No one entered or left without Ethan’s direct clearance.

Inside the VIP suite, Dr. Harrison Vance, the chief of pediatrics and a trusted personal friend of Ethan’s late father, held a digital tablet containing the expedited genetic analysis.

Ethan sat in an armchair near the bed, holding the sleeping infant against his chest. He hadn't put her down for four hours. Across the room, Rosa sat quietly with Lily, who was sipping a juice box.

“Ethan,” Dr. Vance said softly, stepping closer. “The lab completed the emergency DNA sequencing using the cheek swabs we took two hours ago.”

Ethan looked up, his expression guarded, his heart beating a furious rhythm. “Tell me, Harrison.”

Dr. Vance smiled, a warm, emotional glint in his eyes. “Probability of paternity is 99.999 percent. Ethan... she is your daughter. She is Sofia.”

A collective gasp left the room. Rosa covered her mouth, fresh tears slipping down her cheeks.

Ethan squeezed his eyes shut, pressing his lips gently against the baby’s soft head. “She’s real,” he whispered. “My baby is real.”

“She’s also remarkably healthy,” Dr. Vance added, scanning the medical chart. “A bit small for eight months, but perfectly nourished. Whoever cared for her over these past eight months did an exceptional job.”

Ethan looked across the room at Rosa. The anger that had briefly flared in his heart earlier that day was gone, replaced by a profound, overwhelming sense of gratitude.

“You saved my daughter’s life, Rosa,” Ethan said, his voice deep and steady. “You took an incredible risk to protect her.”

“She is an angel, Mr. Cole,” Rosa replied softly. “I only did what any mother would do.”

At that moment, the double doors of the suite swung open.

Marcus Hale, Ethan’s chief of staff, rushed into the room, looking disheveled, his suit jacket unbuttoned. He stopped in his tracks when he saw the infant cradled in Ethan’s arms.

“Ethan!” Marcus gasped, catching his breath. “I came as fast as I could. The private security team said you locked down the entire pediatric wing! What is going on? Is this... is this the child the housekeeper brought?”

Ethan stared at Marcus.

For eight years, Marcus had been Ethan’s right-hand man. He managed Ethan’s schedules, sat in on high-level board meetings, and had even organized Claire’s funeral services. He was the one who had handled the communications with Saint Matthew’s Hospital on the night of the crash while Ethan was trapped in meetings in New York.

“She’s my daughter, Marcus,” Ethan said smoothly, watching his friend’s face closely. “The hospital made a mix-up eight months ago. Sofia survived.”

Marcus’s eyes flickered—a fraction of a second of intense, cold panic that vanished almost as quickly as it appeared, replaced by a practiced look of sheer astonishment.

“My God...” Marcus breathed, stepping forward with his hands raised in wonder. “That’s... that’s a miracle, Ethan! An absolute miracle! How did this happen? Who had her?”

“Rosa kept her,” Ethan said, pointing toward the housekeeper. “Someone paid an administrator at Riverbend to hide her identity and sell her to a private adoption ring. Someone who wanted me to believe my child was dead.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened slightly. He glanced toward Rosa, his eyes narrowing imperceptibly. “A private adoption ring? That’s appalling! We need to bring in the authorities immediately, Ethan. We need to find out who was behind this!”

“We will,” Ethan said quietly. “My private security director, Jack Mercer, is already tracking the financial trails.”

Ethan noticed the subtle tension in Marcus’s shoulders as the name Jack Mercer was spoken.

“In the meantime,” Ethan continued, leaning back in his chair, “Sofia and I are returning home to Cole Manor tomorrow. And Rosa and Lily are coming with us. They will stay under my personal protection.”

Marcus cleared his throat, forcing a smile. “Of course. Whatever you need, Ethan. I’ll make sure the estate security is doubled immediately.”

“Thank you, Marcus,” Ethan said.

As Marcus turned and walked out of the suite to make the phone calls, Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He sent a single text message to Jack Mercer:

Put a continuous tap on Marcus Hale’s phone. Track every call he makes in the next twenty-four hours.
