The final custody hearing was a formality that felt like a funeral for the life Richard Bennett had tried to build. The courtroom was packed, not with high-priced lawyers, but with the press and the families who had been wronged by his company. Richard was a shadow of his former self, his reputation in tatters, his tailored suits looking oversized on his frame as the stress of the impending criminal charges weighed him down. His legal team had abandoned him, citing a conflict of interest, leaving him to face the judge with only a public defender who looked as exhausted as the situation demanded.
The judge didn't even need to ask Ethan for his preference this time. The mountain of evidence—the proof of his involvement in the endangerment of tenants, the bribery of inspectors, and the systematic neglect of safety standards—had made it impossible for him to be granted even supervised visitation.
