Chapter 7 - Healing at the Estate

By noon, the atmosphere inside the Romano estate had completely transformed.

The emergency generators had been repaired, the lights were blazing warm and bright across the polished marble floors, and the smell of fresh rosemary and chicken soup drifted from the main kitchen down the service corridors.

In the master guest suite—upgraded from the third-floor servants' room—Clara Williams sat propped up against a mountain of goose-down pillows, wearing a soft cashmere robe. Her color had returned, and though she was still weak, her eyes were clear and bright.

Zoe sat on the bed beside her, meticulously feeding her mother spoonfuls of soup while chattering happily about the golden retriever puppy Victor had allegedly promised to bring her from the kennels.

There was a soft knock at the open door.

I stepped into the room, holding a small, heavy leather-bound ledger in my hand.

Clara immediately tried to sit up straighter. “Mr. Romano... I don't know how to thank you. Dr. Vance said my medical bills are entirely covered, and... and you moved us into this beautiful room.”

“You don't need to thank me, Clara,” I said, walking over and resting the ledger on the bedside table. “You earned your place here. And as for the ledger...”

I opened it to a marked page. It was a deed of transfer.

“What is this?” Clara asked, looking down at the legal document with furrowed brows.

“Before David Bennett went missing three years ago, he purchased a small floral shop and a modest home in the northern suburbs, using a loan serviced by a subsidiary of the Romano syndicate,” I explained quietly. “When the independent loan sharks took over that district after his disappearance, they illegally foreclosed on the property, forged the signatures, and threw you into the slums.”

Clara’s hands began to shake, the spoon clattering gently against the bowl. Tears welled in her amber eyes. “You... you found our home?”

“It’s yours again free and clear,” I said, meeting her gaze steadily. “The mortgage has been paid in full, the illegal liens have been wiped from the county records, and my legal team has secured a permanent restraining order against every loan shark within a fifty-mile radius of Chicago.”

Zoe dropped her spoon, her jaw dropping open. She looked from the ledger up to me, her eyes shining with absolute awe.

“Does that mean... we don't have to clean shoes anymore, Mr. Romano?” she whispered.

I felt a rare, genuine smile tug at the corner of my mouth. I crouched down beside the bed, gently resting my hand on Zoe’s messy dark curls.

May you like

“You never had to clean shoes, Zoe,” I said softly. “You only had to be brave enough to protect the people you love. And you did that better than anyone I’ve ever known.”

Zoe didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around my neck, burying her face against my shoulder, hugging me with all the fierce, desperate strength of a little girl who finally knew she was safe.
