Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise Over the Mississippi

Six months later, the morning sun rose over New Orleans like a splash of liquid gold, painting the muddy expanse of the Mississippi River in brilliant shades of amber and rose.

From the second-floor balcony of the Mancini estate overlooking the water, the air smelled of blooming jasmine, damp earth, and roasted chicory coffee.

On the manicured lawn below, seven-year-old Gia Mancini—her cheeks flushed with healthy color, her dark curls bouncing—was chasing a golden retriever puppy across the grass, her laughter ringing out across the gardens like music.

Inside the master study, Dr. Iris Delaqua stood by the open French doors, wearing a light summer dress, sipping her coffee while reviewing patient files for her new position as head of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at a newly endowed community clinic downtown—funded by an anonymous foundation managed through Salvatore’s network.

Strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, and a warm chin settled comfortably onto her shoulder.

“You’re working too early again, Doctor,” Salvatore murmured, kissing the side of her neck.

Iris leaned back against his chest, smiling as she set the tablet down on the mahogany desk. “Someone has to keep this household organized. Otherwise, Gia will feed the dog pancakes for breakfast again.”

Salvatore chuckled, turning her around in his arms so she was facing him. He looked healthy, relaxed, and completely at peace, the heavy armor of the underworld replaced by the quiet, unshakable confidence of a man who had finally won the only war that mattered.

“Gia loves the dog,” Salvatore defended with a mock-serious expression. “And the dog loves pancakes. It’s basic biology.”

“It’s basic chaos,” Iris teased, wrapping her arms loosely around his neck.

Down on the lawn, Gia looked up toward the balcony, waving wildly with both arms.

“Papa! Iris! Come down! The puppy found a frog!”

Salvatore smiled, raising a hand to wave back at his daughter, before looking down into the warm, intelligent brown eyes of the woman who had saved her life—and healed his own.

“She’s right,” Salvatore whispered, his voice dropping into that deep, intimate register that still made Iris’s breath catch. “We have places to be.”

Iris smiled, leaning up to kiss him softly on the lips.

“Lead the way, Mr. Mancini.”

And as they walked out together into the golden New Orleans morning, hand in hand toward the laughter echoing from the garden, the dark rivers of the past finally washed away into the sea, leaving behind a future built on courage, healing, and an unbreakable, hard-won love.
