Chapter 5 - The Gathering at Pier 42

The sea breeze off the Hudson River carried the sharp, salty scent of cold water and diesel fuel.

Pier 42 was an abandoned shipping terminal on the southern edge of Manhattan, surrounded by rusted shipping containers and crumbling warehouse brickwork. Rain slicked the asphalt, reflecting the dim amber glow of distant city streetlights.

Dante stood near the water's edge, his long black coat buttoned up to his collar, his hands resting inside his pockets.

Behind him sat three dark SUVs with blacked-out windows. Inside the lead vehicle, protected by two trusted guards, sat Camilla, Rosie, and little Victoria. Dante refused to let his daughter out of his sight, even as he prepared to step into the bloodiest night of his life.

A heavy engine rumble echoed down the deserted pier.

Four heavy pickup trucks pulled up to the warehouse gates, their headlights cutting through the thick fog.

The doors swung open, and twenty men stepped out into the rain. They were older, scarred men—soldiers who carried the heavy, weathered look of veteran mobsters who had survived the turf wars of the 1990s.

At the front of the group walked Bruno Vance. He was fifty-eight years old, with a broken nose, graying hair, and a thick scar running from his ear down to his collarbone.

Bruno walked up to Dante, stopped three feet away, and dropped to one knee on the wet asphalt.

"Don Moretti," Bruno said, bowing his head. "We thought we had lost you to the darkness."

Dante stepped forward, grabbed Bruno by the shoulders, and pulled him up to his feet.

"Get up, Bruno," Dante said softly. "A Moretti captain never kneels in the mud."

The twenty veteran soldiers behind Bruno murmured in approval, their eyes shining with fierce loyalty as they looked at their Don.

"Is it true, Dante?" Bruno asked, his voice low and urgent. "Is it true what you told me on the phone about Tommy?"

"Tommy sold us out," Dante said, his voice echoing across the quiet pier. "He put a hit on Elisa. He has been feeding our operations to the feds for three years. He staged the crash on the Palisades cliff to take the family for himself."

A wave of murderous rage swept through the gathered men. Weapons were checked, slide mechanisms racked, and curses spat into the damp night air.

"That snake," Bruno hissed, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his heavy pistol. "I knew he was dirty! When he transferred me to Staten Island, I knew he was clearing out anyone who wouldn't bow to him!"

"Where is he tonight?" Dante asked.

"He's at the Moretti estate," Bruno replied. "After you left the memorial service with the maid, Tommy panicked. He called a meeting of all district lieutenants at the main mansion for two o'clock in the morning. He told them you had a nervous breakdown and that he was taking temporary control of the syndicate."

A cold, dark smile touched Dante’s lips.

"He called them to my house?" Dante asked.

"Yes, Boss," Bruno said. "There are at least thirty armed men at the estate right now. Tommy has hired mercenaries from the Caruso family to reinforce the perimeter."

"Good," Dante said, pulling a heavy silver-plated 1911 pistol from his shoulder holster. He checked the magazine, chambered a heavy bullet with a crisp CLACK, and slipped the weapon back into his coat. "It saves me the trouble of hunting them down across the city."

He turned back toward the SUV where Camilla was watching through the tinted glass.

Dante walked over, opened the rear door, and leaned inside.

Victoria was awake, sitting in her car seat, her big amber eyes looking up at him without fear. Dante reached out, gently touching her small cheek with his thumb.

"Watch over her, Camilla," Dante said softly. "Bruno's men will escort you to the safehouse in New Jersey. Once the mansion is clear, I will come for you."

"Be careful, Dante," Camilla whispered, her eyes filled with genuine concern. "Tommy knows he's trapped. A cornered rat is the most dangerous kind."

"Rats don't survive in my house," Dante replied.

He shut the SUV door, turned toward his twenty soldiers, and raised his hand.

"To the mansion," Dante commanded. "Leave no traitor standing."
