Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in the Snow

Outside the Greystone mansion, the Chicago night erupted.
Muffled bursts of gunfire echoed from the southern perimeter wall, sharp and staccato against the howling wind off Lake Michigan. Red and blue security strobes painted the snowy lawns in alternating flashes of emergency light.
Adrien didn't flinch at the sound of war outside his window. He walked over to Grace, kneeling down beside her with the same deliberate care he had shown Zoe in the shoe-shine room hours earlier.
“Are you hurt?” Adrien asked, his voice unexpectedly gentle.
Grace swallowed hard, pressing trembling fingers to her mouth. She shook her head, unable to form words. The sheer terror of the last ten minutes had stripped her voice away.
Adrien reached out and gently pulled the tangled hair away from her damp forehead. It was an intimate gesture—one he had never offered any woman in his entire adult life.
“It’s over,” he said quietly. “Moretti’s clean-up crew is being dealt with. You and Zoe are safe here. No one will ever touch you under my roof again.”
“Mr. Romano...” Grace finally whispered, tears spilling over her lashes. “Why? We’re nobody. I’m just a maid. Why save us?”
Adrien looked back toward the sofa, where Zoe was finally turning over in her sleep, clutching her one-eared teddy bear tighter against her chest.
“Because for thirty years,” Adrien said, his dark eyes reflecting the flickering blue security lights from outside, “everyone in my life only came to me when they wanted something they could take. Power. Money. Protection. Fear.”
He turned his gaze back to Grace, his expression softening around the hard edges.
“She didn't want anything from me,” Adrien continued softly. “She just wanted to make sure her mother didn't get sent away into the cold. And in doing so, she saved my life.”
Grace stared at him, seeing past the mafia boss, past the legend of the Chicago ghost, into the scarred, lonely soul of a man who had finally found something real to protect.
“Boss!”
Dante’s voice barked through the intercom system mounted by the door.
Adrien pressed the talk button with his thumb, never breaking eye contact with Grace.
“Report, Dante.”
“South gate is secure, Boss,” Dante’s voice crackled over the speaker, breathless and adrenaline-fueled. “We got three of Moretti’s enforcers in custody. The rest retreated into the woods. Marcus is sweeping the perimeter now. What about Vance?”
“Vance is retired,” Adrien replied coldly. “Bag him and take him down to the sub-basement. I’ll deal with him when the sun comes up.”
“Copy that. And... Boss? What do you want us to do with the estate staff? Some of them are waking up, asking what all the shooting was about.”

Adrien stood up, offering his large, calloused hand to Grace. She hesitated for a fraction of a second before placing her small, trembling hand in his. He pulled her gently to her feet, steadying her when her knees buckled slightly.
“Tell everyone the restructuring has begun,” Adrien said into the intercom, his voice carrying the ironclad authority of an emperor reclaiming his throne. “And tell the head chef to prepare a proper breakfast for our new guests in the east wing. Starting today, things in this house are going to change.”
