Chapter 8 - The Empire Reclaimed

The chaos that followed Cassandra’s entrance into the boardroom was swift, clinical, and absolute.

Before Richard could recover his voice or signal his remaining corporate lackeys, Dante stepped forward and placed a thick, sealed manila folder directly on the mahogany table in front of the lead board director.

"What you are looking at," Dante announced, his voice carrying the calm authority of a man who owned the room, "is a forensic audit of the past thirty-six months. It details unauthorized asset transfers, forged death certificates, wire fraud totaling four hundred million dollars, and conspiring to commit murder—all signed off by Richard Sterling."

The lead director, an elderly man with shaking hands, opened the folder. Within seconds, gasps echoed around the table as the evidence of Richard’s treasonous takeover was laid bare.

"Guards!" Richard screamed, panicking as he backed toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan. "She's an imposter! Call the police! Have them arrested!"

"The police are already downstairs, Richard," a calm voice said from the doorway.

Bram stepped into the boardroom, flanked by four federal marshals and two agents from the Department of Justice’s financial crimes division.

"Federal warrants for securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, and attempted assassination," one of the marshals stated clearly, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around Richard Sterling’s wrists before he could take another step toward the window.

As Richard was dragged out of the boardroom—his frantic, screaming protests fading down the private elevator shaft—a heavy, suffocating tension lifted from the seventy-second floor.

The board members sat in stunned silence, looking from the thick audit folders to the young woman standing at the head of the table.

Slowly, the elderly lead director stood up, leaning heavily on his cane, and offered a deep, respectful bow.

"Welcome home, Ms. Sterling," he said softly.

Cassandra nodded once. She sat down in the high-backed leather chair at the head of the table—the chair that had belonged to her father—and looked across the room at Dante, who remained standing by the window, watching her with a quiet, approving smile.

Later that evening, long after the board members had dispersed and the corporate tower had settled into the quiet hum of night, Cassandra stood on the private balcony of the executive suite, looking out over the glittering sea of Manhattan lights.

A heavy wool coat settled gently over her shoulders. She didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

"You don't have to keep playing bodyguard now," Cassandra said softly, leaning back against Dante’s chest. "The empire is back where it belongs."

"I was never playing bodyguard, Cassandra," Dante murmured, resting his chin lightly on her shoulder. "Some things in this city are too valuable to let go twice."

Cassandra smiled, turning around to wrap her arms around his neck, finally letting go of the cold, dark past as the city hummed below them, completely unaware that the queen had returned to her throne.
