Chapter 3 - The Architecture of Revenge

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting long golden light across the penthouse floor. Sophia awoke in a plush king-sized bed wrapped in Egyptian cotton sheets. The sharp, agonizing pain in her ribs had dulled to a manageable ache thanks to the medication Dr. Vance had prescribed.

When she walked into the sprawling kitchen wearing a soft silk robe provided for her, she found Julian sitting at a marble island, surrounded by leather-bound dossiers, satellite maps, and three encrypted laptops. He was dressed in a crisp black suit, looking as refined as an aristocrat, yet the deadly firearm resting beside his coffee cup served as a reminder of who he truly was.

"Good morning," Julian said, closing a laptop as she approached. "How are your ribs?"

"Better," Sophia said softly, looking at the papers scattered across the island. "You haven't slept, have you?"

"Sleep is a luxury for men who don't have wars to finish," Julian replied, gesturing for a maid to serve her fresh fruit and warm pastry. "My intelligence team spent the night cross-referencing the delivery locations you gave me. The houses in Sunset Park and Bay Ridge are safe houses belonging to the Vance Syndicate."

Sophia froze, her coffee cup hovering near her lips. "Vance? As in Victor Vance?"

"You know the name?"

"Every street vendor and small business owner in Brooklyn knows that name," Sophia said, her voice laced with fear. "Victor Vance is a monster. He controls the private security firms and the shipping ports. People say he doesn't leave witnesses."

"Victor Vance is an ambitious brute who believes he can muscle into my territory by using vermin like Marcus Lane to do his dirty work," Julian corrected, his tone cool and dismissive. "He thought using an innocent woman as an unwitting courier would keep his supply lines invisible to my guards. He was wrong."

He stood up, walking around the counter until he stood inches from her. The proximity sent a strange, thrilling warmth through Sophia’s chest, competing with the residual fear of her trauma.

"I have already seized three of Marcus Lane's stash houses in Brooklyn this morning," Julian continued, reaching out to tuck a strand of dark hair behind her ear with incredible gentleness. "His street-level enforcers have been rounded up. Marcus is currently hiding inside his Red Hook warehouse, surrounded by fifteen hired guns, terrified because he realizes he lost you—and lost his leverage."

"He's going to run," Sophia warned, her hand reflexively resting against Julian’s forearm. "If Marcus feels cornered, he’ll burn everything down and escape."

"He won't get the chance," Julian said, his fingers lingering near her jawline, brushing gently against her healing skin. "Because tonight, I am going to walk into his warehouse and strip him of everything he owns. And I want you to watch."

Sophia blinked, startled. "You want me to come with you?"

"I want you to see the man who hurt you brought to his knees," Julian said, his eyes burning with an unyielding promise. "I want you to realize that he has no power over you anymore. In my world, fear is defeated only when you face the shadow and watch it bleed."
