Chapter 10 - Dawn over the Estate

Three months later, the Calloway estate looked entirely different.
The cold, intimidating limestone fortress had softened. The security cameras were still there—protecting the perimeter, as always—but the gardens were filled with the sound of laughter.
In the formal courtyard, Lily was chasing a golden retriever puppy across the green lawn, her blue cardigan trailing behind her in the spring breeze.
On the wide veranda overlooking Lake Michigan, Claire stood leaning against the polished wooden railing, holding a cup of fresh coffee while watching the morning sun paint the water in shimmering strokes of gold and violet.
Footsteps approached softly from behind.
Strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest.
“You’re staring at the lake again,” Vincent murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to the side of her neck.
“I’m just making sure it’s real,” Claire smiled, leaning back into his embrace, her hand resting comfortably over his. “Sometimes I still feel like I’m going to wake up in that narrow cot in the staff wing and realize I dreamed all of this.”
“You didn't dream it,” Vincent said softly, his voice rich with quiet devotion. “The staff wing is gone. The cottage is yours permanently. And as for the rest…”
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box and snapping it open with his thumb.
Inside rested a diamond ring—simple, elegant, catching the morning light like fallen stars.
Claire turned in his arms, her hazel eyes wide with sudden, breathless emotion.
“Vincent…”
“Lily made three wishes,” Vincent said, his dark eyes shining with an intensity that eclipsed every shadow in his past. “Her first wish was for her mother to sleep safely. Her second wish was for a blanket to keep you warm. Her third wish was to take away the fear.”
He looked down into her eyes, his voice dropping to a rough, vulnerable caress.
“Now it’s my turn to make a wish. Stay with me, Claire. Not as my employee. Not as a guest in my home. Stay with me as my wife, and let me spend the rest of my life making sure neither you nor Lily ever have to wish for anything again.”
Tears spilled over Claire’s lashes, but this time, there was no shadow of fear—only the blinding, beautiful light of a new dawn.
She held out her hand.
“Yes, Vincent,” she whispered. “Yes.”
As he slid the ring onto her finger and pulled her into a deep, passionate kiss against the backdrop of the sparkling lake, Vincent Calloway knew that his empire had finally found its true foundation:
May you like
Not fear. Not power.
Trust.
