Chapter 7 - Awakening and Reckoning

Two months later, the Halcyon Bay Resort hosted another grand event in its glass ballroom.

There were no fireworks this time. There were no shady port captains, no nervous politicians, and no hidden assassins slipping through service corridors.

Instead, the room was filled with quiet elegance: warm string quartet music, soft candlelight, and a select gathering of people who actually mattered.

At the center table sat Oliver Brooks—Ara’s father—walking with a cane but smiling brighter than he had in a decade, his medical debts entirely cleared by a private foundation that had no ties to syndicates or crime. Beside him sat Ara’s sister Ruby, wearing an emerald evening dress, laughing as Rocco Vale awkwardly tried to explain the mechanics of security logistics to her.

And standing near the grand arched windows overlooking the ocean were Santino and Ara.

Ara wore a sleek, sophisticated ivory silk gown that hugged her curves with effortless grace, her dark hair styled in soft, cascading waves. The faint scar on her palm was barely visible, hidden beneath a ring that outshone every diamond in the room.

Santino wore a tailored black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt—and pinned neatly to his lapel was a single, perfect white gardenia.

There was no transmitter inside it this time. Just a flower, chosen by Ara, worn with pride.

“You’re staring,” Ara murmured, a playful smile touching her lips as she leaned against his shoulder.

“I have an excuse,” Santino replied, wrapping an arm securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his side. “I spent five years looking at you and pretending I didn't see you. I’m just trying to make up for lost time.”

“You’re incorrigible,” she teased gently.

“I’m a changed man,” he corrected, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head. “Ask Rocco. He hasn't had to pull a gun on anyone in six weeks.”

“That’s only because you promoted him to head of corporate security and made him wear a necktie,” Ara laughed.

Across the room, the string quartet swelled into a gentle, sweeping melody.

Santino turned her in his arms, taking her hand as they stepped out onto the polished marble dance floor. The guests parted naturally, smiling with genuine warmth as the most feared man on the Gulf Coast held the woman who had brought him to his knees not with violence, but with fierce, unyielding devotion.

As they moved in sync to the music, Ara rested her head against Santino’s chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart.

“Penny for your thoughts,” Santino whispered, his chin resting softly in her hair.

“I was just thinking about that night on the beach,” Ara murmured softly. “When you found me in the sand with the broken glass.”

Santino’s arm tightened around her waist instinctively. The memory of those thirty-seven minutes—of the cold ocean, the poison, and the terror of almost losing her—would always remain etched into his soul as the day his life truly began.

“Don't ever scare me like that again, Miss Voss,” he murmured playfully.

“Mr. Greco,” she smiled against his shoulder, her eyes shining with absolute happiness. “You’ll just have to trust me to keep you alive.”

“Always,” he whispered.
