Chapter 6 - The Hunt in the Snow

By December 22nd, a severe blizzard had swept across Upstate New York, burying the Adirondack Mountains under three feet of snow.

Inside the stone cabin, Evelyn sat by the warm fireplace, sipping hot tea. Her bump was noticeably larger now—she was entering her seventh month. Her health was strong, her spirit restored by the quiet sanctuary of the mountains.

She had spent the last two weeks working remotely with a trusted federal prosecutor, Special Agent Sarah Miller, through encrypted satellite channels.

Agent Miller had verified the authenticity of the Whitmore files and was currently assembling a massive federal indictment against Vincent Moretti for murder, racketeering, and corporate fraud.

"We need you to stay secure, Evelyn," Agent Miller had advised during their last call. "Once the arrest warrant is signed on December 24th, we will move in on his Manhattan office."

Evelyn set her tea down, looking out the cabin window at the swirling white snow.

Suddenly, a strange reflection caught her eye near the tree line.

A flash of metal beneath the dark pine branches.

Evelyn’s heart plummeted. She stood up instantly, pulling back the curtain slightly.

Two black snowmobiles were idling quietly in the woods three hundred yards from the cabin. Three men dressed in tactical winter gear were dismounting, carrying submachine guns.

Victoria Hale’s deep research had finally paid off—they had traced Apex Timber LLC to the Adirondack land registry.

Evelyn didn't panic. She had prepared for this exact scenario.

She grabbed her pre-packed emergency kit, wrapped herself in a heavy winter coat, and unlocked the back door leading into a concealed stone storm cellar built into the hillside behind the cabin.

Before stepping outside into the freezing storm, she activated a remote relay switch on her satellite laptop.

At that exact moment, fifty yards away in the front driveway, a powerful remote ignition signal fired up the engine of a secondary snowplow truck she had parked there, its bright headlights blinding the approaching security team.

"She’s inside! Go! Go!" Dominic Vance’s voice shouted over the wind.

The three men breached the front door of the cabin, weapons raised, sweeping the main room.

"Clear!" one shouted.

"Clear!" another called out.

Dominic walked into the warm living room, looking at the burning fireplace and the hot tea sitting on the table.

"She was here thirty seconds ago!" Dominic growled. "Search the perimeter!"

Suddenly, the heavy oak front door slammed shut behind them. An electronic deadbolt system—wired into the cabin’s emergency security protocol—clicked into place with an iron thwack.

Dominic rushed to the door, pulling violently on the handle. "It’s locked! Blow the lock!"

Before his men could raise their weapons, a thick, sweet-smelling fog began pouring into the room through the fireplace air vents—a high-potency non-lethal incapacitating gas Evelyn’s father had installed in the cabin’s emergency defense system.

Within fifteen seconds, Dominic and his men began stumbling, coughing wildly, before collapsing onto the hardwood floor, completely unconscious.

Outside, Evelyn stood at the entrance of the stone storm cellar, watching the cabin through the snowstorm. She pulled out her satellite phone and dialed Agent Miller.

"Agent Miller," Evelyn said, her voice steady in the howling wind. "Vincent’s security team just arrived at my location. They are neutralized inside the cabin."

"Are you safe, Evelyn?!" Miller asked frantically over the static.

"I’m safe," Evelyn replied, looking back toward the snow-covered driveway. "Execute the arrest warrants now."
