Chapter 8 - The Dawn of a New Empire

One year later.

The November wind was just as cold as it had been on our wedding day, but the gray, bruised light of the Atlantic had given way to a brilliant, unclouded autumn sunset.

I stood on the stone balcony of the Ramos estate, wearing a simple emerald silk dress that hugged my frame without a single layer of armor, lace, or padding. My back was bare to the ocean breeze, the faded scars now nothing more than silver whispers of a past I had finally left behind.

Down below, the old Martin shipping yards—now renamed the Providence Harbor Trade and Arts Center—glowed with bright lights, hosting an exhibition of local painters and sculptors. My father’s name had been scrubbed from the city records, replaced by a foundation we ran together, dedicated to helping survivors of domestic violence and abuse rebuild their lives.

Thomas was still somewhere in Ohio, working odd jobs at a hardware store and dodging bill collectors.

Arthur Martin had passed away quietly during the spring thaw, slipping out of the world without a single mourner at his graveside. I hadn't attended the funeral. I had stayed home and planted white lilies in the estate garden instead.

Footsteps echoed softly behind me on the stone balcony.

Strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest. A familiar chin rested gently on my shoulder.

“You’re going to catch cold standing out here without a wrap,” Diego murmured, pressing a warm kiss against the side of my neck.

“I’m not cold,” I smiled, leaning back into his embrace, my fingers intertwining with his. “For the first time in my life, Diego... I’m actually warm.”

He turned me around in his arms, his dark eyes searching my face with an expression of such fierce, unconditional devotion that it still sometimes took my breath away. The ruthless mafia boss who had bought me as a weapon of revenge had instead become my sanctuary.

“Are you happy, Noelle?” he asked softly, his thumb brushing against my cheekbone.

I looked past his shoulder, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of gold and deep violet. I thought of the frightened girl standing in Saint Catherine’s Cathedral a year ago, terrified of the man standing beside her, wearing a dress designed to hide her broken bones.

I smiled, lifting my left hand to show the enormous diamond ring catching the last rays of light.

“I was never your hostage, Diego,” I whispered, leaning up to press my lips to his. “I was your partner all along.”

He pulled me flush against him, kissing me back with a fierce, possessive hunger that promised eternity.

The monsters of our past were buried beneath the sea, and in their place, we had built an empire of our own.
