Chapter 5 - The Fragile Dawn

The resignation was swift, framed as a "personal health crisis" that necessitated an immediate move to the East Coast. Arya didn't understand the sequence of events at first. She went to the office on Monday expecting to handle the logistics of the doctor's departure, only to find him already gone, his office cleared out, his emails forwarded.

She was terrified. She waited for the other shoe to drop, for the backlash of his sudden exit to land on her shoulders.

Instead, the next day, Matteo called her into his office. He didn't look at her with the professional detachment of a boss. He looked at her with a raw, terrifying vulnerability.

"You don't have to work today," he said, his voice strained.

"I have the quarterly reports, Mr. Valente—"

"Stop," he interrupted. He walked around the desk, stopping just inches from her. "I know."

She froze. The air in the room felt suddenly charged. "You... you don't know anything."

"I saw," he whispered. "And I have spent the last three days trying to forgive myself for not seeing it sooner."

For the first time, Arya didn't shrink away. She looked up at him, the tears she had held back for years finally welling in her eyes. The mask, for the first time, shattered.
