CHAPTER 5: THE TRUTH BENEATH HER SKIN

Rain returned to Chicago like it had never left.

Not violent this time.

Not dramatic.

Just persistent—like the city itself was refusing to let anything end cleanly.

Matteo Valente stood alone outside Valente Tower for several minutes before going back inside.

He didn’t move because of the weather.

He moved because of what Dante Russo had said.

She was placed.

That sentence kept repeating in his mind like a system error he couldn’t delete.

Inside the tower, everything looked the same.

Security checkpoints. Glass walls. Controlled silence.

But Matteo no longer saw structure.

He saw possibility of manipulation inside every structure.

And Arya Monroe was at the center of it.

He didn’t go to the war room first.

He went to her.

The upper suite was dim when he entered.

Arya was standing by the window again.

Same position.

Different energy.

She turned immediately when she heard the door.

And for a fraction of a second—

something passed between them.

She saw it.

The change in him.

Matteo didn’t speak right away.

That silence made her step forward slightly.

“What happened?” she asked carefully.

Matteo studied her face.

Not like before.

Not as protection.

Not as anger.

As analysis.

Arya noticed instantly.

Her voice lowered.

“Matteo… you’re scaring me.”

That word should have mattered.

It didn’t change him.

But it anchored him.

“You were placed in my tower,” he said finally.

Arya froze.

Not dramatically.

Not like someone caught in a lie.

More like someone hearing a language she had been taught to forget.

“I wasn’t placed anywhere,” she said immediately.

Matteo didn’t respond.

He just watched her.

Waiting.

That waiting was worse than accusation.

Arya shook her head slightly.

“No,” she said again. “That’s not true.”

But her voice lacked certainty.

Not because she was lying—

but because something inside her couldn’t fully reject it.

Matteo stepped closer.

“Dante Russo said you were being monitored,” he said.

Arya’s breath caught instantly.

“Don’t listen to him,” she whispered.

“Why?” Matteo asked.

Silence.

Arya looked away.

That hesitation again.

That fracture.

Matteo noticed everything now.

“You knew him longer than you told me,” he said.

Arya’s fingers tightened at her sides.

“…yes.”

A pause.

Matteo’s voice lowered.

“And you didn’t tell me.”

Arya’s eyes flickered.

“I couldn’t.”

“Why.”

Her lips parted.

Then closed again.

Because the answer wasn’t simple.

It was dangerous.

She finally spoke.

“He wasn’t just watching me,” she said quietly.

Matteo didn’t interrupt.

Arya continued.

“He was tracking changes. Access shifts. Security blind spots. Patterns in your organization.”

Matteo’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“And me,” he said.

Arya hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

The room felt colder.

Not physically.

Strategically.

Matteo turned slightly away.

Processing.

Not emotion.

Structure.

“If Dante wasn’t controlling you,” he said slowly, “then who was he reporting to?”

Arya shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Matteo looked back at her immediately.

“You don’t know,” he repeated.

She stepped forward.

“I swear I don’t,” she said. “I thought I was just working events. Security coordination. Logistics.”

Her voice cracked slightly.

“Until I wasn’t allowed to leave.”

Silence.

Matteo’s jaw tightened.

“Explain.”

Arya swallowed.

“Every time I tried to resign… something happened,” she said. “My file disappeared. My transfer requests were rejected without record. My ID access changed overnight.”

A pause.

“And then the bruises started.”

Matteo stopped moving.

Now everything aligned.

Not emotionally.

Mechanically.

This wasn’t random violence.

This wasn’t even personal obsession.

It was containment.

Arya was not just a person inside his organization.

She was a point of access.

A controlled variable.

And someone had been using her to map him.

Without him noticing.

Matteo spoke quietly.

“Why you.”

Arya shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

A pause.

Then softer:

“I was just… there.”

That sentence hit differently.

Because in his world—

nobody was ever “just there.”

A notification flashed on Matteo’s desk system.

He ignored it.

Another came.

He still didn’t move.

Arya noticed.

“What is it?” she asked.

Matteo finally looked at her.

His voice was low.

“They found Dante Russo’s financial trail.”

Arya went still.

“And?”

Matteo’s eyes darkened slightly.

“It doesn’t lead to him.”

A pause.

“It leads into us.”

Silence.

That was the moment everything shifted.

Arya’s voice came out barely above a whisper.

“What does that mean?”

Matteo didn’t answer immediately.

Because for the first time—

he didn’t like the answer forming in his head.

“It means,” he said slowly,

“someone inside my organization has been funding his operation.”

Arya stepped back slightly.

“No…”

Matteo continued anyway.

“And using you as the entry point.”

Arya shook her head, visibly overwhelmed now.

“I didn’t do anything,” she said quickly.

“I know,” Matteo said immediately.

Too fast.

Too certain.

That surprised her.

He stepped closer again.

“This isn’t about what you did,” he said.

“It’s about what you were made to be near.”

A long silence followed.

Outside, rain tapped softly against the glass.

Inside, everything felt suspended.

Arya finally spoke again.

“Then what am I supposed to do?” she asked.

Matteo looked at her for a long moment.

Not as a mafia boss.

Not as a man in control of an empire.

But as someone realizing the battlefield had already been inside his walls long before he opened the wrong door.

He said quietly:

“You stay alive.”

A pause.

Then:

“And you stay close to me.”

Arya shook her head slightly.

“That doesn’t fix anything.”

Matteo stepped closer until there was almost no space left between them.

“No,” he said.

“But it stops you from being used again.”

Silence.

Her breathing was uneven now.

Not fear of him.

Fear of everything that had led here.

“You’re not safe either,” she whispered.

Matteo’s expression didn’t change.

“I stopped being safe a long time ago.”

He turned toward the door.

Arya spoke quickly.

“Matteo.”

He stopped.

Didn’t turn.

Her voice softened.

“If everything you said is true…”

A pause.

“Then what happens now?”

Matteo stood still for a moment.

Then said:

“Now we find out who built the system around you.”

A beat.

“And we burn it from the inside out.”

He opened the door.

Before leaving, he added without looking back:

“And Arya…”

She waited.

His voice lowered slightly.

“This time, you’re not alone in it.”

And then he was gone.

Arya stood in the quiet room.

The rain outside continued.

But inside her—

something had changed.

Not safety.

Not certainty.

Something far more dangerous.

Awareness.

Because for the first time…

she understood she had never been outside the system.

May you like

Only inside it.

Waiting to be noticed.
