Chapter 7 - The Trap at Dawn

By 5:00 AM, the torrential rain had cleared, leaving behind a thick, silver mist that rolled across the manicured lawns of the Lake Forest estate like smoke from a battlefield.

Inside the grand dining hall, the long mahogany table was set for twelve.

Crystal glasses caught the pale, pearlescent light of dawn filtering through the floor-to-ceiling French doors. At the head of the table sat Alessandro Romano, dressed in an immaculate charcoal three-piece suit, his hands folded calmly over a black leather binder resting on the wood.

To his right sat Elena Romano, stunning in an emerald silk dress, her diamond tennis bracelet catching the morning light with every subtle movement of her wrist. She sipped her espresso with an air of practiced nonchalance, though a faint, nervous twitch near her left eye betrayed her inner panic.

"I still don't understand why we were summoned at dawn, Alessandro," Elena said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Some of us have board meetings in Milan by noon. And after the dreadful scare with little Leo last night—thank God the child survived—we all need our rest."

"A scare," Alessandro repeated, his voice dangerously calm. "Yes. An unfortunate accident involving a loose bead."

"Children put everything in their mouths," Elena smiled, setting her porcelain cup down with a soft clink. "Perhaps you should look into hiring a more attentive nanny. Miss Vance seems... overly dramatic."

At the far end of the table, standing quietly in the shadows near the service entrance, I kept my hands folded neatly over my apron, watching every micro-expression on her face.

Alessandro didn't answer immediately. He slowly opened the black leather binder.

He slid three distinct documents across the polished mahogany toward her.

First, a printed forensic report detailing the industrial chemical composition of the blue enamel bead, matching it precisely to a custom jewelry commission registered under Elena Romano’s private estate account in Zurich.

Second, a financial ledger showing a series of untraceable wire transfers from Elena’s offshore accounts to Dominic’s personal Swiss holding company.

Third, a small flash drive containing the high-definition micro-SD backup footage from the nursery camera.

Elena glanced down at the papers.

Her immaculate composure shattered instantly. The color drained from her face, leaving her skin looking like curdled milk beneath her heavy makeup. Her hand shook so violently she nearly knocked over her espresso cup.

"This... this is fabricated," Elena stammered, her voice rising in sudden panic. "You forged these! You're trying to frame me because you want sole control of the northern ports—"

"Quiet, Elena," Alessandro said, the single word carrying the crushing weight of an executioner's axe.

He stood up slowly from his chair, leaning his palms against the edge of the table as he towered over her.

"Dominic has already signed a full confession," Alessandro continued, his voice dropping an octave. "He told us about the server reboot. He told us about the blackmail. And he described, in agonizing detail, exactly how you stood over my son's crib at 1:58 in the morning and tried to murder my heir."

The other family representatives seated around the long table murmured in shock, shifting uneasily in their velvet chairs.

Elena pushed her chair back, standing up so abruptly it screeched against the parquet floor. She looked around the table, desperately searching for allies among the elder capos.

"You're all fools!" she screamed, her mask of polite aristocracy entirely gone, replaced by feral hysteria. "He's a tyrant! He cares nothing for the Commission! He's letting a common nanny dictate family policy!"

She reached into her handbag resting on the floor, her fingers frantically clawing toward something inside.

Before her hand could even clear the bag, two armed guards stationed behind her chair lunged forward, wrenching her arms back and pinning her forcefully against the mahogany table.

A small, silver-plated pocket pistol clattered across the wood, spinning to a halt near my feet.

I looked down at the gun, then slowly raised my eyes to meet Elena’s venomous glare.

"Take her away," Alessandro commanded, his voice cold as winter stone. "Strip her of her assets, revoke her seat on the council, and put her on the midnight cargo flight to South America. If she ever sets foot in Italy again, feed her to the sturgeon."

As the guards hauled a screaming, thrashing Elena out of the grand dining hall, absolute, breathless silence settled back over the twelve families.

No one objected.

No one moved.

They knew the throne had just been secured in blood and digital proof.
