Chapter 4 - The Digital Ghost

The private terminal in Daniel Carver’s third-floor study was a fortress of isolated networks, encrypted servers, and military-grade firewalls that bypassed the main estate servers entirely.

The room was dark, illuminated only by the cold, blue glow of three large monitors displaying scrolling lines of hexadecimal code and encrypted ledger entries.

Hannah sat in the high-backed leather chair, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. Beside her stood Daniel, watching the screen with the cold, calculating focus of a general reviewing battlefield maps.

“The decryption key Martin left on the note worked,” Hannah murmured, her eyes darting across the cascading data streams. “It’s a complete mirror of the master financial logs from Whitlock Maritime Logistics dating back three years.”

“Show me the anomalies,” Daniel commanded.

Hannah clicked through a series of nested folders, opening a spreadsheet labeled Project_Tide_Phase_2.

The numbers spilled across the screen—column after column of multi-million-dollar transfers routed from city port development funds through offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands, and finally funneled into private accounts controlled by a single individual.

Daniel’s jaw tightened. A muscle ticked along his jawline.

“Arthur Whitlock,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. Claire’s father.

“It wasn't just Arthur,” Hannah said, pulling up a sub-file containing scanned PDF copies of signed agreements. “Look at the secondary authorization signatures. Someone with executive-level clearance inside Carver Holdings signed off on every single transaction, overriding the compliance protocols.”

Daniel leaned in, his face inches from the screen. He scanned the signature block at the bottom of the authorization form.

It bore his own name.

Daniel Carver.

Hannah looked up at him, a flicker of suspicion returning to her eyes. “Your signature.”

“It’s a forgery,” Daniel said instantly, his voice cold as winter ice. “Look at the stroke on the capital ‘D’. The real signature loops downward at a forty-five-degree angle; this one is curved upward. Someone copied it from a public deed filed with the city clerk in twenty-twenty-one.”

“Who had access to your private seal?” Hannah asked.

“Only two people,” Daniel replied, straightening up slowly. “My chief financial officer, Victor Vance... and Claire Whitlock, who had full access to my office during our engagement planning sessions over the last six months.”

The heavy oak door of the study suddenly clicked.

Before either of them could move, the door swung open.

Claire Whitlock stood in the doorway. She wore a silk nightgown draped in an expensive cashmere robe, her hair cascading loosely over her shoulders. Her face was flushed, her eyes wild with a mixture of alcohol, paranoia, and furious jealousy.

She stared at Hannah sitting in Daniel’s private terminal, then shifted her gaze to Daniel, who stood close behind her chair.

“What is going on here?” Claire shrieked, her voice echoing off the high wood-paneled walls. “What is the maid doing in your private study at two in the morning? Have you lost your absolute mind, Daniel?!”

Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't scramble to close the laptop or offer a polite excuse. He simply turned around, his dark eyes slicing through Claire with terrifying calmness.

“Get out, Claire,” he said.

“Get out?!” Claire laughed hysterically, stepping further into the room. “I am your fiancée! We are getting married in six weeks! And I walk in here to find you hovering over a pregnant servant like—like she’s something precious!”

She pointed a shaking, manicured finger directly at Hannah.

“I cut her hair in the ballroom today because she needed to know her place! And instead of firing her on the spot, you gave her your jacket! And now you’re in here with her in the middle of the night, going over company files?!”

Claire stormed forward, her eyes darting toward the laptop screen. She caught sight of the financial ledgers scrolling past.

Her face drained of color in a single heartbeat.

“You... what did you open?” she whispered, the hysteria instantly morphing into cold, naked panic.

“Project Tide,” Daniel said smoothly, taking a slow step toward her. “The offshore accounts your father set up to loot the city port funds. The ones you signed my name to using forged seals.”

Claire stumbled backward, hitting the edge of a mahogany bookshelf. Books rattled against the wood.

“That’s... that’s a lie! You can’t prove—”

May you like

“I don't need to prove it to a jury, Claire,” Daniel interrupted, his voice dropping into a register that made the air in the room feel heavy and suffocated. “In my world, treason against the family is settled very quickly.”

Claire’s eyes widened with sheer terror. She realized she had nowhere left to run.
