Chapter 8 - The Queen's Vow

The stars came out late that night, brilliant and sharp against the dark velvet sky.
The black town cars had quietly dispersed, leaving behind only two discreet guards stationed at the corner of the street. The quiet had returned to Ashgrove—not the tense, fearful quiet of before, but a deep, peaceful stillness.
Kayla walked out onto her front porch, wearing a warm wool blanket over her shoulders. The wooden floorboards had been swept clean, the broken door hinge replaced with shiny new brass hardware, and a fresh welcome mat sat at the top of the steps.
Milo trotted out behind her, his tail wagging slowly as he sniffed the cool night air. He walked to the top step, lay down with a heavy sigh of contentment, and rested his chin on his paws.
Wilton stepped out onto the porch, carrying a glass of water and a small velvet box.
"Arthur Vane turned himself into the FBI an hour ago, Boss," Wilton said softly. "His whole network is being dismantled. Gwen is hiding out at her mother's house in Florida. She won't be coming back to this city."
Kayla took the velvet box, opening it gently under the yellow porch light. Inside lay a brand-new silver collar tag, pristine and shining.
She reached down, unclipped the old, scratched tag stamped RICHARD, and placed it carefully inside the velvet box. Then, she clipped the new tag onto Milo’s collar.
It was stamped with a single word:
HOME
Wilton looked down at the old dog, a faint, rare smile touching his lips. "Do you think Richard would be mad? That you broke your promise about staying completely quiet?"
Kayla looked out over the quiet roofs of Ashgrove Street. Down the block, at Number 40, a young family from the local shelter was already being moved into the clean, furnished house by her foundation—a young mother and her twin daughters who would never have to worry about rent again.
"Richard didn't build an empire just to win wars, Wilton," Kayla said softly, her hands resting flat and peaceful against the wooden porch railing. "He built it so that one day, the people we love could sleep without fear."

She knelt down beside Milo, wrapping her arm around the old dog's neck, pressing her cheek against his gray muzzle. Milo let out a low, happy rumble, closing his eyes under her soft touch.
"We aren't running anymore, Milo," Kayla whispered into the quiet night air. "This is our turf now."
