Chapter 7 - Retribution in the East Wing

Two nights later, the rain stopped, leaving a heavy, bone-chilling fog rolling in off Lake Michigan and wrapping the stone battlements of the Burroughs estate in a shroud of white mist.

In the high-security subterranean command center beneath the mansion, three giant monitors displayed live satellite feeds, thermal drone scans, and encrypted police scanners from downtown Harrow Falls.

Marcus stood near the primary console, tapping rapidly on a mechanical keyboard. "Boss, we've got movement. Three black unmarked SUVs just cleared the toll bridge on the north perimeter. No transponders. Heavy tactical gear. It’s Viktor’s clean-up crew."

Dylan stood before a massive tactical table, calmly assembling the slide of a customized Glock 19 pistol with methodical, unhurried precision. The soft click-clack of metal components echoed in the quiet room.

"How many?" Dylan asked without looking up.

"Twelve men. Led by Viktor’s personal enforcer, a guy named Kovalev," Marcus replied, his face grim. "They think we're sitting ducks because the estate staff took the night off for the private security rotation."

"They think wrong," a voice said from the doorway.

Dylan looked up.

Molly stood at the entrance of the command center. She had traded her frayed waitress apron and oversized cashmere sweater for a tactical black turtleneck, cargo trousers, and combat boots borrowed from the estate armory. Her hair was pulled back into a tight, military-grade braid, and a heavy leather holster rested snugly against her left hip.

The frightened, broken girl from Blackwoods was completely gone. In her place stood Dr. Eleanor Vance—the woman who had spent five years working frontline trauma in combat zones before entering medical research.

"You're supposed to be in the secure suite upstairs," Dylan said, though there was no heat in his voice, only a deep, burning flash of admiration in his slate-gray eyes.

"I've spent three years running from Viktor Sterling," Molly said, walking steadily across the metal grating of the floor until she stood right beside him at the tactical table. She reached out, picked up a spare Beretta 9mm from the tray, checked the magazine with practiced, fluid ease, and clicked it into place. "I'm done running. Where do you want me?"

Dylan stared at her for three long seconds. Then, a slow, dangerous, incredibly handsome smile broke across his face—the smile of a king who had just discovered his queen wasn't a piece to be defended, but the weapon that would win the war.

"The eastern courtyard," Dylan said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "They're going to try to breach the old conservatory glass doors. Marcus will take the perimeter flank. You and I... we're going to welcome them to the neighborhood."
