Chapter 8 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the Chicago winter had finally broken, yielding to the bright, warm sunshine of a brilliant spring morning.

The Costello estate in Highland Park no longer felt like a fortress built by fear. The high iron gates stood open to welcome visitors, the security cameras were quiet, and the sprawling lawns were alive with the sound of laughter and birdsong.

Inside the grand sunroom overlooking the manicured gardens, seven-year-old Arthur Costello was running across the Persian rug, kicking a red soccer ball toward a small portable net while two golden retrievers chased him joyfully.

Sitting on a wrought-iron bench beneath a blossoming white cherry tree on the patio, Fiona Jenkins took a slow sip of her coffee, letting the warm morning breeze wash over her face.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind her.

Strong, familiar arms wrapped around her waist from behind, and a comforting warmth settled against her back.

“He’s going to wear those dogs out by noon,” Dominic murmured against her neck, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her skin.

“He has a lot of energy to make up for,” Fiona smiled, leaning back comfortably against Dominic’s chest, feeling completely and utterly safe for the first time in her life.

She turned her head slightly, looking up at him. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking less like a feared mafia boss and more like a man who had finally found his home.

“Are you sure your business associates approve of you settling down with a former pediatric nurse?” Fiona teased softly.

Dominic chuckled, his arms tightening around her waist.

“Let them worry about their own lives,” Dominic said, turning her around in his arms so she was facing him. His icy blue eyes burned with a fierce, unwavering devotion. “They know better than to question my choices. Especially when my choice is the most brilliant, courageous woman in this city.”

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box and flipping it open. Inside rested a magnificent diamond ring that caught the spring sunlight like captured fire.

“Stay with us, Fiona,” Dominic whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “Not just for Arthur. For me. Be my wife. Be the heart of this house, and let me spend the rest of my life proving to you that you never have to walk through the dark alone again.”

Tears welled in Fiona’s eyes, but this time, they were tears of pure, unadulterated joy.

She looked past Dominic toward the lawn, where little Arthur had just scored a goal, cheering loudly and calling out his favorite word in the world:

“Fiona! Look! Look!”

Fiona turned back to the man who had torn down an empire to keep her safe, a radiant smile breaking across her face.

“Yes,” she whispered, leaning in to press her lips against his. “Yes, Dominic. A million times, yes.”

EndingThe Chicago underworld continued to whisper about Dominic Costello—about his ruthless power, his impenetrable security, and his absolute dominance over the city's syndicates.

None of them knew the truth.

None of them knew that the feared mafia boss hadn't been saved by guns, money, or armies.

He had been saved by a tired pediatric nurse who walked into a dark house, sliced open a poisoned pillow, and taught a cold, dangerous man what it truly meant to fight for love.
