Chapter 7 - The Long Night in the Nursery

The hallway outside the nursery turned into a theater of calculated, merciless efficiency.

Susan’s hired mercenaries thought they were raiding a retired mob boss’s quiet suburban estate to rescue a wealthy socialite and grab two terrified children for leverage. They didn't realize that Rory Starks’s security detail was comprised of elite former special forces operatives who treated the mansion like a fortified combat zone.

Pop. Pop.

Muffled shots rang out down the west wing. Shouts dissolved into groans as men hit the polished marble floor, neutralized without ever breaching the inner core.

Inside the nursery, Lily and Rose stirred, whimpering softly in their beds as the distant concussions rattled the windowpanes.

Veronica sat between them on the rug, holding a children’s storybook open in her lap, speaking in a low, soothing, rhythmic voice that cut right through the distant sounds of chaos.

“Once upon a time,” Veronica murmured, stroking Rose’s soft curls while gently holding Lily’s hand, “there was a castle protected by the strongest walls in the whole world. And nothing—absolutamente nada—was ever going to get inside to hurt the princesses because their father stood at the gate with a sword made of starlight.”

Lily blinked sleepily, her hazel eyes looking up at Veronica with trusting innocence. “Is Daddy fighting the monsters?”

“Your daddy is taking care of everything, sweetheart,” Veronica smiled gently, her heart hammering against her ribs. “Just close your eyes and listen to the story.”

At that exact moment, the heavy oak nursery door clicked open.

Veronica’s muscles instantly tensed, her hand sliding toward a heavy brass paperweight she had pocketed from the study desk just in case.

The door swung wide.

Rory stood in the doorway. His dark grey cashmere sweater was torn at the shoulder, a thin smear of blood streaking his forearm, his knuckles bruised and raw from close-quarters combat. But his eyes were clear, fierce, and entirely victorious.

“It’s over,” Rory breathed, stepping into the room and locking the heavy door behind him.

Susan Thompson and her surviving mercenaries were currently zip-tied in the grand foyer, awaiting federal custody and a lifetime in maximum-security penitentiaries where syndicate justice and federal prosecution would ensure they never saw the light of day again.

Rory walked slowly across the plush carpet to the twins’ beds. He dropped heavily to his knees, burying his face in the space between them, his massive shoulders trembling with the sudden, overwhelming release of months of built-up terror and exhaustion.

Veronica watched him from the edge of the bed. She stood up quietly, intending to slip out into the hallway and give the father and daughters their private, sacred moment of reunion.

Before she could take two steps, Rory’s hand shot out, catching her wrist with a gentle, unbreakable grip.

“Don't go,” he said, looking up at her with eyes stripped of all armor, all pretense, and all fear.
