Chapter 7 - The Interrogation of Memory

The sub-basement beneath the East Wing was a forgotten relic of Damon’s grandfather’s era—a windowless, concrete bunker originally built to store smuggled goods and contraband cash before federal task forces made such crude methods obsolete.

Damon walked down the narrow, damp concrete stairs, his tailored Italian shoes clicking against the slick floor. The Warden trotted close behind him, his heavy claws clicking rhythmically against the stone.

Diego and two tactical officers stood in the center of a large, dust-filled chamber illuminated by emergency floodlights.

“Look at this, boss,” Diego said, pointing his flashlight toward the far wall.

Damon stepped forward, shining his own tactical light across the concrete surface. Nailed to the wall was a massive corkboard covered in photographs, newspaper clippings, bank statements, and hand-drawn connection strings.

It was a complete visual history of the Castellano empire—every shell company Damon had built, every major corporate rival he had dismantled, every vulnerability in his security grid mapped out with ruthless, mathematical precision.

And right in the center of the board, pinned with a silver dagger, was a photograph of Damon himself, taken from his balcony just three weeks ago.

Below the photograph, written in clean, elegant cursive handwriting that Damon would know anywhere, was a single sentence:

“The architect who forgot how to build a home.”

“She’s been watching us the entire time,” Diego whispered, his hand resting nervously on his holster. “She’s had eyes inside the estate every single day for three years. Boss, this is a security breach of catastrophic proportions. If she wanted to take down the empire, she could have done it a thousand times over.”

Damon stared at the handwriting. He didn't feel anger. He didn't feel the cold, calculating detachment that usually governed his reactions to betrayal.

Instead, a strange, heavy warmth settled in his chest.

She hadn't tried to destroy him. She had mapped him. She had studied every flaw, every cold edge, every defensive wall he had constructed around his heart—and she had left a map for him to follow.

“She didn't want to destroy the empire, Diego,” Damon said quietly, his voice echoing off the damp concrete walls. “She wanted to see if I was strong enough to survive without her.”
