CHAPTER 3: The Man in the Spotlight

The applause downstairs rose again—louder this time, more deliberate, like the room had decided to believe in the story it was being told.
Matteo Valente stood in the corridor outside the wardrobe suite, still half between two worlds.
Behind him: silence, mirrors, and a woman who refused to fall apart.
Ahead: light, cameras, and a city that worshipped carefully curated heroes.
He chose neither.
Instead, he took out his phone.
Arya’s voice cut in immediately.
“Don’t.”
Matteo didn’t look back.
“I haven’t done anything yet.”
“That’s the problem,” she said quietly.
That sentence lingered longer than it should have.
Matteo paused.
Then said:
“Then tell me what stops me.”
No answer came.
Only silence.
So he moved.
Downstairs, the ballroom of Valente Tower had transformed into a stage.
Golden lights washed over polished marble. Cameras lined the perimeter like silent witnesses. Senators smiled too widely. Donors clapped too precisely.
And at the center of it all—
Dr. Adrien Vale.
He stood behind the podium in a perfectly tailored black suit, his posture relaxed in the way only men trained for admiration could achieve.
Hands folded.
Smile calibrated.
Eyes warm enough to be trusted.
“Thank you,” Adrien said smoothly, “for honoring me with this recognition.”
Applause.
Matteo watched from the upper level balcony, partially hidden by shadow.
No one noticed him yet.
Adrien continued.
“But this award is not mine alone.”
A pause.
Then he smiled toward the front row.
“It belongs to the people I love.”
Arya sat there.
Still.
Composed.
Perfectly placed.
Her face did not change when the camera briefly turned toward her.
But Matteo saw it.
A fraction of stillness that did not belong.
Adrien extended a hand.
“And especially,” he said warmly, “to my fiancée.”
The room responded instantly.
Soft “awws.”
Applause.
Cameras shifting.
Arya stood up slowly.
Too slowly.
Matteo’s gaze narrowed.
Something was wrong with the timing.
Not obvious.
Not loud.
But wrong.
Arya walked toward the stage.
Each step measured.
Controlled.
Like she was walking through water instead of air.
Adrien reached out and gently took her hand.
The cameras flashed.
The perfect couple.
The perfect story.
The perfect lie.
Matteo’s jaw tightened.
Back in the wardrobe suite corridor, Matteo was already moving again.
Phone in hand.
One message sent.
Then another.
“Pull security footage. Corridor B-7.”
“Check all access logs for past 72 hours. No delays.”
A pause.
Then a third:
“Identify any physical incidents involving Arya Monroe.”
He stopped walking for a moment.
Then added:
“And do not sanitize.”
Sent.
On stage, Adrien leaned slightly toward Arya as he spoke softly into the microphone.
“She has been my inspiration,” he said.
Arya smiled.
But it did not reach her eyes.
Matteo saw it from above.
Not admiration.
Not love.
Control.
Adrien continued.
“In fact, Arya has always believed in saving lives.”
Another pause.
Then a subtle shift in tone.
“And I think that is why she understands sacrifice.”
Matteo’s eyes narrowed slightly.
That word.
Sacrifice.
Adrien placed a hand lightly on Arya’s waist for the cameras.
Too practiced.
Too precise.
Arya did not move away.
But her fingers curled slightly at her side.
Matteo saw it.
And something inside him hardened.
A notification arrived.
Matteo’s phone lit up.
SECURITY FEED: CORRIDOR B-7
He opened it.
At first, nothing unusual.
Footage of staff movement. Guests passing. Arya entering the corridor alone earlier that evening.
Then—
A second figure.
Adrien Vale.
Matteo’s expression didn’t change.
But his eyes did.
He watched.
Carefully.
Slowly.
Adrien followed her into the corridor.
No cameras inside the suite.
But enough outside to suggest timing.
Then Arya entered the wardrobe suite.
Minutes later—
Adrien left.
Fast.
Adjusting his cuff.
Looking at his reflection in the wall mirror as he walked away.
Matteo paused the footage.
Replayed it.
Once.
Twice.
A third time.
Then he exhaled slowly.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Something colder.
Understanding.
On stage, Adrien lifted Arya’s hand slightly higher.
“For our future together,” he said to the audience.
Applause erupted.
But Arya’s eyes flicked upward.
For half a second.
Across the room.
To the balcony.
To where Matteo stood.
And in that fraction of a moment—
She realized.
He knew.
Matteo lowered his phone.
The gala continued below him.
Music returned.
Laughter resumed.
Glass clinked.
But everything had changed.
He turned away from the balcony slowly.
And walked back toward the corridor.
Back toward the door.
Back toward the truth waiting behind it.
Arya Monroe was no longer just his secretary.
And Adrien Vale was no longer just a guest.

Something had already begun.
And someone was about to lose control of it
