Chapter 2 - The Command in the Dark

"Go," the little girl said.

It was not a scream. It was not a plea. It was a single, flat, absolute command issued in a voice that sounded like a soldier giving an order on a battlefield.

The dog didn't bark. He launched himself into the narrow brick corridor like a thirty-pound cannonball of muscle, scars, and fury. His first leap took him over a pile of sodden cardboard boxes, his jaws clamping directly onto the throat of the man who had just laughed. The gunman let out a choked gurgle as the beast hit him, sending him crashing into the brick wall before dragging him down into the standing water on the asphalt.

"Kill the mutt! Shoot it!" Ray Delgado screamed, swinging his nine-millimeter toward the chaotic swirl of fur and blood.

Before Ray could pull the trigger, a glass bottle shattered against the side of his head with a sharp, explosive CRACK!

Ray stumbled sideways, blinded by burning liquor and blood streaming down his temple.

The little girl had stepped directly into the alley light. In her small hands, she held a heavy iron tire iron she had scavenged from a nearby dumpster. She didn't flinch. She didn't hesitate. She swung it with terrifying, practiced leverage into the kneecap of the second shooter.

The man shrieked, his leg bending at an impossible angle as he dropped his weapon into the puddle.

Marcus Cole, bleeding heavily from two bullet wounds in his abdomen, watched the unbelievable spectacle from the wet ground. His criminal mind, honed by two decades of violence, instantly recognized what was happening: this was not a random child and a wild street dog. This was a tactical unit operating in absolute, terrifying sync.

"Marcus! Get up!" the girl barked, her dark eyes flashing through the downpour as she sidestepped a wild punch from one of Ray’s remaining men. "Move or you die!"

The instinct for survival, long buried under the heavy weight of impending death, flared back to life in Marcus's chest. He gritted his teeth against the searing agony in his gut, grabbed the rusted fire escape ladder above his head, and hauled himself to his feet.

The scarred dog was a whirlwind of violent efficiency. He ripped through the remaining shooters, biting ankles, tearing exposed wrists, and using his low center of gravity to knock full-grown men off their feet onto the slick, rain-slicked pavement.

Ray Delgado, holding his bleeding face, spat a mouthful of blood and aimed his pistol at the little girl’s chest. "You little bitch—"

Marcus moved. With the last reserve of his fading strength, the former mafia don lunged forward, throwing his entire body weight into Ray’s side.

Both men slammed hard against the brick wall. Marcus grabbed Ray’s gun arm, twisting it upward until the bone snapped with a wet CRACK! Ray shrieked in agony as the gun clattered onto the wet concrete.

"Tell Victor..." Marcus rasped, his eyes burning into Ray's terrified face, "...that the king isn't dead."

The little girl picked up the fallen pistol from the puddle, checked the chamber with a fast, professional slide movement that no nine-year-old should ever know, and pressed the cold barrel directly against Ray’s forehead.

"He gets it," the girl said quietly to Marcus. "Now run."

She didn't shoot Ray. Instead, she brought the heavy steel grip of the weapon down across his temple, knocking him instantly unconscious.

"Bear! Heel!" she commanded.

The scarred dog immediately released the arm of a groaning gunman, trotting over to the girl's side, his chest covered in rain and blood, his tail straight, his breathing calm.

Marcus leaned heavily against the wet wall, his vision blurring around the edges as shock and blood loss began to pull him under once more. "Who... who are you?"

May you like

The girl tucked the nine-millimeter into the deep pocket of her oversized coat. She looked up at the six-foot-two mob boss with eyes that carried the weight of a hundred hard winters.

"My name is Lily," she said. "And if you don't want Victor's cleanup crew to find your body in ten minutes, you're coming with us."
