Chapter 5 - Whispers Before the Storm

Forty-eight hours before the gala, Harold Caldwell’s phone wouldn't stop ringing.

He sat behind his massive mahogany desk in his penthouse office overlooking Biscayne Bay, a glass of thirty-year-old scotch in his hand, his face flushed with the triumphant adrenaline of a man who believed he had finally won the game of life.

"Damn it, where is she?" Harold muttered to his executive assistant, a nervous young man named Tyler who was currently sweating through his shirt collar.

"We checked her old apartment, sir," Tyler stammered. "The landlord said she packed her bags two weeks ago. No forwarding address. And... and nobody has seen her near the docks."

Harold frowned, taking a sharp sip of scotch. "It doesn't matter. Valetti took her off my hands. She’s probably at the bottom of the bay by now, which is where she belonged all along. Ungrateful little ghost."

He checked his gold Rolex. Tomorrow night was the Venetian Grand. Five hundred of Miami’s elite—bankers, developers, politicians, and socialites—would rise to their feet to applaud his genius. He had spent months rehearsing his speech, striking the right balance of humility and visionary ambition. He was untouchable.

Suddenly, his private office door flew open without a knock.

Harold started to bellow in rage, but the words died in his throat.

Standing in the doorway wasn't Tyler. It was Dominic Valetti.

He wasn't carrying a weapon, but he moved with the unmistakable, crushing gravity of a tidal wave. Two of his enforcers flanked the doorway, blocking any exit.

"Valetti," Harold gasped, standing up so fast his leather chair crashed backward against the wall. "What... what the hell is the meaning of this? You can't just barge in here—"

"Quiet, Harold," Dominic said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he walked across the plush carpet and stopped three feet from the desk.

"The debt is settled," Harold stammered, his bravado evaporating like morning mist. "You have my property. You have... you have what was agreed upon."

"I came to deliver an invitation," Dominic said, reaching into his coat pocket and pulling out a heavy, gold-embossed card. He tossed it onto the desk. It landed right in the center of Harold's paperwork.

"An... an invitation?" Harold stared at the card. It was an all-access VIP pass to the Venetian Grand.

"You wouldn't want to celebrate your crowning achievement without your family present, would you, Harold?" Dominic’s dark eyes locked onto his with an icy, predatory stare. "After all, every great entrepreneur owes his success to the people who made him who he is."

Harold swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. "She's... she's not coming."

"Oh, she's coming," Dominic said softly, turning toward the door. "And she's bringing a speech of her own."

Before Harold could form another sentence, Dominic and his men vanished into the hallway as silently as they had arrived, leaving the Miami mogul shaking in the empty silence of his own office.
