Chapter 7 - Night of the Iron Gate

The night air was freezing as Lucas sprinted across the gravel driveway toward the North Manor house.

The ancient oak trees cast long, menacing shadows across the lawn. In the distance, near the outer perimeter fence, the red dots of security cameras blinked rhythmically, but as Lucas reached the pathway leading to the cottage, he saw the red lights go dark one by one.

Julian’s men had disabled the feed.

“Clara!” Lucas shouted, bursting through the unlocked wooden door of the North Manor house.

The interior was dark. The air purifier hummed softly in the corner, and the giant brown bear sat propped up against the pillows of Lily’s bed, but the room was empty.

“Mr. Moretti?”

A frightened voice echoed from the hallway. Clara stepped out of the small kitchen, holding a damp dish towel, her face pale with terror.

“Where is Lily?” Lucas demanded, grabbing Clara by the shoulders.

“She... she was sleeping, but two men in black tactical gear came through the back window—” Clara sobbed, her knees buckling. “They took her, Mr. Moretti! They said if I screamed they’d kill us both!”

Lucas’s heart hammered against his ribs like a sledgehammer. He didn't waste a second on words. He pulled his own Sig Sauer pistol from his shoulder holster, chambered a round with a sharp clack, and turned back toward the door.

“Stay inside, lock the doors, and don't open them for anyone except me,” Lucas ordered.

Before Clara could answer, he bolted back out into the night, heading toward the old horse stables where the subterranean security bunker—and Julian’s emergency extraction tunnel—was located.

The heavy steel doors of the stable were open.

Inside, illuminated by a single flickering overhead bulb, stood two armed enforcers in black tactical gear. In the center of the room sat five-year-old Lily Carter, huddled on a wooden crate, clutching her stuffed brown bear so tightly her knuckles were white. She wasn't crying; she was frozen in absolute, paralyzed terror.

“Drop the weapon, Moretti!” one of the enforcers yelled, raising his submachine gun toward Lucas’s chest.

Lucas stopped ten feet away. His pistol was held low at his side, but his eyes were fixed not on the guards, but on the small, pink-pajamaed figure sitting on the crate.

“Let the child go,” Lucas said, his voice terrifyingly steady. “She has nothing to do with this.”

“Mr. Vance’s orders,” the second guard sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger. “Nobody leaves loose ends. First the maid’s kid, then you.”

The guard raised his barrel—

Before he could pull the trigger, a small, piping voice rang out across the stable.

“Mister Moretti?”

Lily didn't look at the gun. She looked straight at Lucas, her big, dark eyes wide and brave, exactly as they had been when she knelt beside him on the marble floor two nights ago.

“You forgot your air,” Lily whispered, holding out her hand.

In her small palm sat a brand-new, blue-capped rescue inhaler that Clara must have packed in her bag.

The guard laughed harshly, glancing down at the little girl. “What is she—?”

That fraction of a second—that single heartbeat of distraction—was all Lucas Moretti needed.

With blinding, lethal speed, Lucas brought his pistol up.

Bang. Bang.

Two deafening cracks echoed off the stone walls of the stable. Both guards dropped instantly, their weapons clattering against the concrete floor.

Silence rushed back into the room, smelling of cordite and damp earth.

Lucas lowered his smoking gun, dropped to his knees, and crossed the concrete floor in three long strides. He scooped five-year-old Lily into his arms, pulling her tightly against his chest as her small arms wrapped around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

“You’re okay, Lily,” Lucas choked out, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in three years. “I’ve got you. You’re safe.”

May you like

“I knew you’d come,” Lily murmured into his coat. “You’re my bodyguard now.”

Lucas closed his eyes, holding the little girl as if she were the only real thing left in a world built entirely on blood and lies.
