Chapter 10 - A New Dawn in Graybridge

Spring came early to Graybridge that year.

The ice over the harbor melted away under a brilliant March sun, revealing clear blue waters and bustling piers where cargo ships unloaded container after container under the watchful, orderly supervision of a revitalized Duca syndicate.

Inside the grand estate, the heavy mahogany doors of the master suite remained open—not locked away from the world, but welcoming the morning breeze.

On the manicured lawn overlooking the lake, a little girl in a red sock and a yellow sock chased a golden retriever puppy across the green grass, her laughter ringing out like wind chimes in the spring air.

Sitting on the veranda under a shaded trellis, Sophia Bennett poured two cups of fresh, steaming coffee, handing one to the man sitting beside her.

Lorenzo Duca looked healthier than he had in a decade. The gray had faded slightly from his temples, his shoulders were broad and strong, and the cane rested idly against the arm of his chair, used more as a habit now than a necessity.

“The new shipping contracts with the European liners cleared this morning,” Sophia reported smoothly, reviewing a tablet screen before setting it down on the table. “Profits are up twelve percent, and Rossi says the dock unions have never been more cooperative.”

Lorenzo took a sip of his coffee, his gray eyes warm as he watched Emma tumble playfully onto the grass with the puppy.

“Rossi knows better than to test us,” Lorenzo smiled. He turned his gaze toward Sophia, studying her with quiet admiration. “You know, you’re running my entire administrative division better than three generations of vice presidents ever did.”

“I learned from the best,” Sophia teased lightly, her eyes sparkling. “Though I still maintain your filing system was a crime against organizational efficiency.”

“Guilty as charged,” Lorenzo laughed, a rich, full sound that echoed across the estate gardens.

A shadow fell over the veranda as Bruno walked up, carrying a small, beautifully wrapped package tied with a bright yellow ribbon. He set it on the table in front of Emma’s empty chair.

“What’s that?” Bruno asked, nodding toward the package.

“It’s from the pastry chef in downtown Graybridge,” Sophia explained, smiling. “Emma told him last week that his croissants needed more butter. He sent her a diploma in culinary arts.”

Bruno’s mouth twitched into his signature half-smile. “Smart chef. Smart kid.”

As the morning sun climbed higher into the azure sky, bathing the entire Duca estate in warm, golden light, Lorenzo looked out over the waterfront he had fought so hard to conquer, and then back at the little girl laughing on the lawn.

The dark days of winter were over. The poisoners were gone. And for the first time in his life, Lorenzo Duca realized that true power wasn't found in the fear you inspired in others, but in the family you built when you finally opened your door.
