Chapter 8 - A Crown of Iron and Glass

By dawn, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a sky as pale and sharp as polished steel.

Inside the grand dining room of Villa Duca, the long mahogany table was set for three.

At the head of the table sat Lorenzo, wearing a crisp white dress shirt and dark trousers. To his right sat Elena, looking hesitant and uncertain in a dark wool dress Mrs. Gable had provided from the estate’s private wardrobe.

To Lorenzo’s left sat little Mia, sitting atop two stacked leather cushions so her elbows could reach the table.

In front of Mia sat a massive plate of silver-dollar pancakes topped with fresh strawberries, whipped cream, and chocolate syrup.

“Is all of this for me?” Mia asked, her eyes wider than the china plates.

“All of it,” Lorenzo said smoothly, cutting a small piece of his own toast. “And if you don't finish it, Pino will be very disappointed.”

Pino, sitting faithfully beside Mia’s chair, gave another heavy tail-thud against the floorboards.

Elena leaned toward Lorenzo, her voice hushed and anxious. “Don Lorenzo... Marco told me what happened last night. The security breach... the lawyer. Are we in danger here?”

Lorenzo set his fork down, looking at the young mother with absolute seriousness.

“My house has been in danger for thirteen years, Elena,” Lorenzo said calmly. “Because for thirteen years, I allowed men like Silvio Moretti to think that I was a businessman who could be bought, threatened, or negotiated with.”

He looked down at Mia, who was currently trying to feed a strawberry to her one-eyed rabbit.

“Yesterday,” Lorenzo continued softly, “a three-year-old child reminded me that power isn't about how many ships you control on the docks. It’s about who you protect when the rain starts falling.”

He reached into his pocket and placed an official legal document on the table in front of Elena.

“What is this?” Elena asked, picking up the paper.

“It’s a long-term employment contract,” Lorenzo explained. “You are no longer a temporary maid hired through an agency. As of this morning, you are the Director of Domestic Operations for the Villa Duca Estate. Your salary is quadrupled. Your daughter will be enrolled in the private academy on the North Hill, with all expenses paid by the Duca Foundation.”

Elena stared at the document, her breath catching in her throat. “Don Lorenzo... I can’t accept this. I haven't done anything to deserve—”

“You kept your child alive and honest in a world that tried to crush you both,” Lorenzo cut her off gently. “In my book, that makes you more qualified than anyone I’ve hired in ten years.”
