Chapter 10 - A Legacy Rewritten

Three years later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the manicured lawns of the Moretti estate in Rhode Island.
A massive white marquee was set up on the grass near the cliffside terrace, where dozens of families—mothers, children, and doctors from the David Carter Foundation—were gathered for the annual summer charity gala.
Laughter and music drifted across the ocean breeze.
On the wooden deck overlooking the water, Sophia sat in a wide rocking chair, holding a three-month-old baby boy wrapped in a light blue blanket. The baby had dark hair and slate-grey eyes—the spitting image of his father.
Beside her sat eight-year-old Emma, sitting at a small white table, happily coloring in a giant picture book with a set of bright markers.
Aleandro walked out onto the deck, wearing a white linen shirt and dark trousers, carrying a tray of iced tea and lemon slices.
He set the tray down on the table, bending over to kiss Sophia gently on the forehead, then resting his hand softly over his newborn son’s head.
“How is little David doing?” Aleandro asked softly.
“He just fell asleep,” Sophia smiled, looking up at her husband with deep, contented affection. “He looks just like you when he sleeps.”
“Poor boy,” Aleandro joked gently, making Sophia laugh.
Emma looked up from her coloring book, holding up a bright red marker. “Look, Dad! I painted the hero in the story red!”
Aleandro froze for a brief second, his heart swelling with a profound, overwhelming warmth.
Dad.
She had started calling him that six months ago, and every single time the word left her lips, it felt like the greatest honor he had ever earned in his life.
He walked over, kneeling beside Emma’s chair, looking closely at her drawing.
“That’s a very fine red suit, sweetie,” Aleandro said, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. “Who is the hero fighting?”
“He’s not fighting anyone,” Emma replied proudly, pointing her small finger at the paper. “He’s building a big hospital for all the kids who get sick.”
Aleandro looked across the lawn, watching fifty children playing tag near the flower beds, guarded by discreet, watchful security guards who wore soft smiles instead of stern scowls.
The mansion behind them—once a dark fortress of crime, fear, and secrecy—was now filled with light, laughter, and hope.
He reached out, pulling Emma close against his side, while his hand reached back to take Sophia’s fingers into his own.
He thought back to that dark afternoon four years ago—to the poisoned wine glass, the falling phone, and the four-year-old girl who had run into his study carrying a faded pink rabbit backpack and her last EpiPen.
She had saved his life that day.
But as he looked at his wife, his children, and the bright, peaceful world they had built together from the ashes of the past, Aleandro knew the truth.
She hadn't just saved his life.

She had given him a soul.
And beneath the sunny skies of Rhode Island, beside the roaring ocean, the Moretti family’s real story was finally just beginning.
