Chapter 2 - The Truth in the Shadows

Lorenzo stopped three feet from the rocking chair. His hands, usually so steady that he could hold a glass of water without a ripple while a bomb exploded nearby, were trembling violently.

Isabella slowly raised her head. The movement was painfully fragile, as if every joint in her neck belonged to a glass doll on the verge of shattering. Her chestnut eyes—the eyes Lorenzo had searched for in every crowd, every dark room, every nightmare for eight straight months—focused on him.

A tear tracked down the fresh, pale scar on her left temple, glistening in the amber glow of the bedside lamp.

“Lorenzo?” her voice was barely a rasp, dry and cracked like wind dragging across desert sand.

“Isabella...” He dropped to his knees on the hardwood floor. He didn't care about the blood staining his tailored trousers, nor did he care about the storm howling against the window glass outside. He reached out with a trembling hand, his knuckles hovering an inch from her cheek, terrified that if he touched her, she would dissolve into smoke and leave him with the cold ashes of his own delusion.

“Don't touch me,” she whispered, pulling back into the cushions of the chair. Her arms tightened defensively around the small bundle in her lap—a blanket woven in pale cream wool, from which tiny, rhythmic gasps emerged.

Lorenzo froze. The rejection hit him harder than any bullet ever had. “Isabella, it’s me. It’s Lorenzo. You’re safe. I’m here.”

“He said you were dead,” she choked out, her shoulders shaking violently. “He told me... he told me you died in the explosion. He said if I ever left this room, if I ever made a sound, your crew would kill the baby thinking she was a fake.”

Lorenzo’s blood transformed into liquid ice. He felt a presence behind him in the hallway.

Slowly, deliberately, Lorenzo turned his head.

Matteo Vieri stood in the threshold of the nursery. His suit jacket was unbuttoned. His right hand rested heavily inside his coat pocket, his silhouette framed by the dim hallway light. In the shadows behind Matteo stood two guards, their faces unreadable, their postures stiff.

The silence in the room stretched so tight it felt ready to snap like a piano wire.

“You told her I was dead, Matteo?” Lorenzo asked. His voice did not carry anger. It carried something far worse—an absolute, cosmic coldness that filled the nursery until even the baby stopped crying.

Matteo didn't move his hand from his pocket. His eyes flicked from Lorenzo kneeling on the floor to Isabella clutching the child.

“She was supposed to stay asleep tonight, Boss,” Matteo said quietly. His voice held no panic, no remorse, only the flat, exhausted tone of a man whose long gambit had finally reached its end. “Sophia wasn't supposed to bring the child near the east wing. It was a mistake in scheduling.”

“A mistake,” Lorenzo repeated. He slowly stood up, pushing off his knees. His massive frame towered over the small rocking chair, shielding Isabella and the baby entirely from Matteo’s line of sight. “Eight months. Eight months I spent burning down this city looking for the men who blew up my convoy. I buried a three-foot coffin, Matteo. I cried tears I didn't know I had over a piece of charred blanket.”

“There was no child in that coffin because she was born three hours before the convoy left the clinic, Lorenzo!” Matteo’s voice finally cracked, a flash of desperate energy breaking his composure. “I saved them! Do you have any idea what would have happened if Silas Moretti knew you had an heir? He was waiting at the bridge! The bomb on the road wasn't meant to kill you—it was meant to wipe out your legacy!”

“So you staged their deaths?” Lorenzo took one slow step forward. “You stole my wife? You hid my daughter in a rotting guesthouse behind my own gardens and let me rot in hell for nearly a year?”

May you like

“I kept them alive!” Matteo snapped, pulling his gun from his coat.

The weapon cleared his leather holster, its black steel gleaming under the dim lamp. But Matteo never got the chance to raise the barrel.
