Chapter 8 - Unmasking the Serpent

At 9:00 PM, the subterranean council chamber beneath the main mansion was filled with dark shadows and cold stone.
Seated around a heavy oval marble table were the five senior captains of the Moretti syndicate—men who had served my father for thirty years, controlling the city’s logistics, real estate, and private security networks.
At the head of the table sat me.
Bound to a heavy wooden chair at the opposite end of the room was my mother, Victoria. She wore a simple gray wool dress, her hair unstyled, her golden jewelry removed. Her eyes burned with a desperate, venomous hatred as she looked at the men sitting around the room.
"This is an outrage!" Victoria spat, her raspy voice echoing off the damp stone walls. "I am the widow of Antonio Moretti! I built this family while you were all street lieutenants! You have no authority to sit in judgment over me!"
Old Captain Bruno—a scarred veteran with silver hair—looked at her with tired, heavy eyes.
"We aren't here to judge your status, Victoria," Bruno said slowly. "We are here because Adrian laid proof on this table two hours ago that you murdered his wife, Isabella."
"It's a lie!" Victoria screamed, writhing against her leather restraints. "Adrian has been manipulated by a low-class maid! That girl forged those receipts! She’s trying to steal the Moretti fortune!"
I didn't raise my voice. I pulled a small digital recorder from my pocket and set it flat on the marble table.
I pressed PLAY.
A scratchy, five-year-old audio recording filled the room:
"Is the line loose?" Victoria’s recorded voice echoed clearly through the speaker.
"Yes, Mrs. Moretti," a panicked male voice answered. "The rear brake line on the Mercedes is cut. It will fail when she hits fifty miles an hour on the lake curve."
"Good," Victoria’s voice replied, stone cold. "Make sure the money reaches your Zurich account before sunrise. If my son finds out, I will have you buried under the dock."
The recording ended with a sharp CLICK.
The five captains sat in absolute, stunned silence.
Old Bruno closed his eyes, letting out a deep, bitter sigh, shaking his head in profound disgust. "Lord have mercy... Antonio would turn in his grave."
Victoria stopped screaming. The color drained from her face until she looked like a corpse sitting in the chair. Her mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.
"The mechanic was captured in Miami three hours ago," I said, my voice dead and devoid of all warmth. "He confirmed the recording. He confirmed the bank wires."
I stood up, resting my hands flat on the marble table, looking down the length of the room at my mother.
"Victoria Moretti," I declared, my voice carrying the absolute weight of the syndicate's law. "By unanimous decision of the council, your name is erased from the Moretti ledger. Your assets are seized and transferred into a blind trust for Lily and Sofia. You will spend the remainder of your life in a private monastic sanctuary in northern Maine, under twenty-four-hour guard. You will never see my daughters again. You will never hear my voice again."
"Adrian... please!" Victoria sobbed, real terror finally breaking her down as two heavy guards stepped forward to unbind her chair. "I am your mother! I loved you! Everything I did was to protect your position!"

"You didn't love me, Victoria," I said, turning my back on her as the guards hauled her toward the exit doors. "You loved power. And today, you have none."
Her crying faded down the long stone corridor until the heavy iron doors slammed shut, sealing her fate forever.
