Chapter 4 - The Gilded Cage Collapses

Three weeks after the press conference, Victoria Velasco found herself trapped in a very different kind of cage.

Her lavish Beverly Hills social circle—the very people she had spent years cultivating through charity galas, country club memberships, and exclusive book clubs—had vanished like morning mist. The moment the audio recordings of her screaming insults at an elderly immigrant woman were legally submitted into the public court record, her fair-weather friends deleted her phone numbers, blocked her on Instagram, and barred her from entering their estates.

Even her prized country club membership was quietly revoked under the guise of "code of conduct violations."

Desperate and isolated, Victoria realized that her multi-million-dollar divorce settlement demands were evaporating faster than her designer perfume collection.

She decided to make one final, reckless move.

It was a Tuesday afternoon when Marcus answered a discreet knock on the door of the Santa Monica penthouse. Standing in the hallway, looking disheveled, hollow-eyed, and wearing a trench coat that hid her designer clothes, was Victoria.

“May I come in?” she asked, her voice tight, brittle, and stripped of all its former arrogance.

Marcus stared at her for a long moment, then stepped aside, leaving the door wide open.

Victoria walked into the living room, her eyes darting around the minimalist, ocean-facing space. There were no maids running around, no expensive artwork imported from Milan—just the sound of crashing waves and the quiet, soothing hum of classical music playing softly in the background.

Lil Chen was sitting on the balcony, knitting a brightly colored woolen scarf, completely unbothered by Victoria’s presence.

“You won, Marcus,” Victoria said bitterly, turning to face him, her hands trembling as she clutched a leather handbag to her chest. “You destroyed my reputation. You cut off my credit cards. You made me a pariah in this city.”

“I didn't destroy your reputation, Victoria,” Marcus replied coldly, pouring a cup of green tea. “Your own cruelty did that. I simply stopped hiding it.”

Victoria swallowed hard, her expression twisting into a desperate, pathetic attempt at seduction and negotiation. She took a step closer, her voice dropping into a pleading whisper. “We can settle this quietly, Marcus. Drop the embezzlement counter-suit. Give me a reasonable settlement—five million, maybe ten—and I’ll sign the final divorce papers today. We can both walk away.”

Marcus took a slow sip of his tea, looking at her with eyes that felt like polished obsidian.

“Five million?” Marcus repeated softly. “Victoria, you haven't realized yet, have you?”

“Realized what?”

“The court audit is complete,” Marcus said smoothly. “Not only did you siphon funds from our joint accounts, but you also illegally funneled capital from a charitable foundation I sponsor into your personal boutique accounts to pay for your runway wardrobe. That isn't just a civil divorce matter, Victoria. That’s federal wire fraud.”

Victoria staggered backward as if she had been physically struck. The blood drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking ghostly under the bright California sun.

“You... you wouldn't,” she whispered, horror dawning in her eyes. “You wouldn't send your own wife to federal prison over a few shopping bills.”

“You weren't my wife the moment you told an elderly woman who sacrificed her life for her family that she belonged in a garbage bin,” Marcus said, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding finality. “My legal team has filed the criminal referral papers this morning. You can either cooperate with the U.S. Attorney’s office and accept a plea deal involving full financial restitution and community service, or you can let a federal jury decide how many years you spend behind bars.”

May you like

Victoria stared at him, finally understanding the true magnitude of the monster she had awakened. The golden cage she had built around her vanity had slammed shut, locking her inside for good.

Without another word, she turned around, stumbled toward the elevator, and fled the penthouse forever.
