Chapter 5 - The Brew of Life and Whispers of War

Before Thorne’s mercenaries could kick the cabin door off its hinges, a terrifying roar echoed from the darkness of the pine forest.
Out of the shadows charged Rodrigo, swinging the massive ironwood branch with all the strength left in his body.
CRACK!
The heavy branch struck the first mercenary square across the side of his helmet, sending the man crashing face-first into the frozen mud, his weapon flying across the drive.
The second mercenary turned in shock, raising his submachine gun, but Rodrigo didn't give him the chance. He tackled the man around the waist, slamming him against the hood of the black SUV. The two men wrestled wildly in the snow, punching and clawing in the dark.
Inside the cabin, the heavy front door flew open.
Claudia stepped out onto the porch, holding a double-barreled hunting shotgun that belonged to Mateo. Seeing Rodrigo bleeding on the ground beneath a heavily armed intruder, she didn't hesitate.
She aimed the shotgun at the sky and pulled the front trigger.
BOOM!
The deafening roar of the 12-gauge blast echoed across the valley like thunder.
"GET AWAY FROM HIM!" Claudia screamed, her voice echoing with fierce, terrifying wrath as she racked the lever, pointing the smoking barrel directly at Julian Thorne’s chest.
Thorne froze, his hand hovering over his sidearm. He looked at Claudia’s cold, unwavering eyes behind the shotgun, then at the second mercenary who was nursing a broken jaw on the ground, and finally at Rodrigo, who had managed to pin the other guard in a chokehold.
Thorne spat a mouthful of blood into the snow, a grim, cruel smile spreading across his scarred face.
"So the rumor is true," Thorne sneered, raising his hands slowly. "The great Rodrigo Alarcón has gone native in the woods."
Rodrigo stood up slowly, wiping blood from a cut above his eye. He stepped in front of Claudia, placing himself between the gun barrels and his family.
"Vance sent you," Rodrigo said, his voice cold and flat as steel.
"Mr. Vance is simply looking out for the best interests of Alarcón Enterprises," Thorne replied smoothly. "The board is holding an emergency vote in thirty-six hours to declare you unfit to lead. I was sent to confirm your... physical condition."
"You came to murder us," Rodrigo corrected coldly. "Tell Vance that if he wants my company, he’ll have to come up this mountain himself and take it from my dead hands."
Thorne looked at Claudia’s shotgun, then at the dark tree line where the mountain wind was picking up, signaling an impending snowstorm.
"Thirty-six hours, Alarcón," Thorne warned softly, stepping backward toward his vehicle. "The storm is coming in. You can't stay up here forever. And when you come down... we'll be waiting."
Thorne dragged his two injured men into the SUVs, slammed the doors, and the heavy vehicles reversed down the dirt trail, disappearing into the dark fog.
Rodrigo turned around instantly, grabbing Claudia by the shoulders. "Are you alright? Is Camila safe?"
"We're fine," Claudia said, her hands trembling as the adrenaline began to leave her body. She looked at the deep cut on Rodrigo’s forehead, her fingers gently touching his face. "You're bleeding..."
"It's nothing," Rodrigo said dismissively. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out the brass box, and held it out to Mateo, who was standing quietly in the doorway. "I have the Orchid, Doctor."
Mateo took the box, opening it slightly to inspect the crimson petals glowing under the lantern light. A look of profound respect crossed the old doctor’s weathered face.
"You climbed the northern face in three hours... and brought it back intact," Mateo murmured, looking at Rodrigo’s shredded clothes and bloody hands. "You are more of a man than I gave you credit for, Rodrigo."
"Save her," Rodrigo whispered simply. "Please."
That night, while the winter storm roared outside the cabin, dumping two feet of snow across the mountain passes, Mateo prepared the final, sacred elixir.
The crushed Blood Orchid was combined with purified mountain honey, crushed amber, and the boiled essence of three rare roots. The liquid glowed a rich, golden-red hue in the copper pot.
Together, Rodrigo and Claudia sat beside Camila’s bed.
Rodrigo gently held his daughter’s head, stroking her soft hair, while Claudia fed her the warm golden medicine spoon by spoon.
This time, Camila did not convulse.
As the medicine entered her system, a soft, soothing warmth seemed to spread through her tiny frame. Her pale cheeks filled with a rich, rosy pink. Her temperature stabilized, and her faint, irregular heartbeat smoothed out into a strong, vibrant, steady rhythm.
At three o'clock in the morning, while the snow battered the cabin windows, Camila’s long eyelashes fluttered open.
She didn't look dazed or confused. Her dark eyes were bright, clear, and filled with life.
She looked up, seeing Rodrigo sitting beside her, his tear-streaked face resting on his hands.
"Papa?" Camila whispered, her voice small, but completely clear and devoid of pain.
Rodrigo gasped, lifting his head instantly. He stared at his daughter in utter dis-belief. "Camila? My sweet girl?"
Camila slowly reached her tiny, warm hand out from beneath the blanket, resting her fingers against Rodrigo’s cheek.
"Why are you crying, Papa?" she asked softly, offering a sweet, bright smile. "My tummy doesn't hurt anymore."
Rodrigo let out a choked cry, burying his face in the mattress beside her, wrapping his arms around her tightly, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated joy.
Claudia stood beside the bed, tears streaming down her own face. She felt a gentle touch on her arm; Rodrigo reached up with one hand, pulling Claudia down beside them, bringing her into the embrace.
For a long time, the three of them held each other in the warm glow of the cabin fire while the storm raged outside.
The miracle was complete. Camila was cured.
But as dawn broke over the white-capped mountains, revealing a frozen, silent world, Rodrigo knew that his fight was only half-over. In thirty-six hours, Hector Vance would steal everything Rodrigo had built, using his wealth to hunt them down forever.

Rodrigo looked at his daughter, who was eating a bowl of warm porridge with a healthy appetite, and then at Claudia, whose eyes met his with complete trust.
"It's time to go back," Rodrigo said quietly, his voice filled with a cold, terrifying resolve. "It's time to take back my life."
