Chapter 3 - The Broken Reflection
The psychological pressure inside the Whitman mansion reached a boiling point. The house felt like a pressurized cabin, ready to shatter. Claire found a breakthrough when she discovered a hidden compartment behind a portrait in the library—a space Noah had carved out himself. Inside was a high-end digital recorder, a device the boy had hidden months ago. It contained months of audio: Vanessa talking to herself, practicing her "devoted" voice in front of the mirror, and, more chillingly, phone calls to an accomplice regarding the disposal of evidence and the "gradual liquidation" of Noah’s assets.
But Vanessa was becoming faster, more paranoid. She suspected Claire was onto her. The house became a labyrinth of traps. Household objects began disappearing—the piece of glass Noah gave Claire, her own master keys, and finally, her cell phone.
Vanessa orchestrated a final "accident." During the annual Charity Winter Gala at the house, she planned to have the massive, three-tier crystal chandelier in the grand ballroom fall—a tragic, freak occurrence that would eliminate both the "negligent" housekeeper and the "troubled" stepson, clearing the way for her to inherit the Whitman fortune without the burden of a child.
Claire intercepted a frantic text message on an old tablet Noah had managed to hide in his wheelchair. It detailed the time: 10:00 PM, during the toast.
Claire sat Noah down in the safety of his room, playing the audio for him. For the first time, the boy’s eyes weren't empty. They were burning with a cold, sharp intelligence that mirrored the man his father was.

"She thinks I’m a pawn," Noah said, his voice firm. "But she forgot that I’m the one who designed the home automation software for this entire estate. I know how she bypasses the security. We don't need to run, Claire. If we run, she wins. We need to let her trap herself."
They executed a plan of complex misdirection. They replaced the real chandelier’s support pins with weakened replicas—the same ones Vanessa had installed—but they rigged the electronic locking mechanism to a feedback loop. Using Noah’s tablet, they prepared to divert the signal. They weren't just going to stop her; they were going to broadcast her crimes to the entire room.
