Chapter 5 - The Proposition

Lucia stared at him, her heart hammering against her ribs. "A proposal, Mr. Ward? I'm... I'm just a housekeeper."
"You have a degree in finance from NYU, Lucia," Alex replied smoothly, reading the shock on her face. "You graduated top of your class in 2022 before your husband walked out, before Sofi was diagnosed with pediatric respiratory complications, and before you had to take whatever cash-in-hand domestic work you could find to survive."
Lucia felt the breath leave her lungs. "How... how could you possibly know that?"
"I told you," Alex said, walking over to the kitchen table and picking up Sofi’s pink crayon. "I read patterns. And I don't leave loose ends unaddressed—especially not the brilliant ones."
He turned back to face her, leaning against the edge of the counter.
"My corporate intelligence division needs a senior risk analyst someone who can spot corporate fraud, hidden asset transfers, and backroom betrayals before they ever reach my desk," Alex said, his voice dropping into a professional, commanding register. "And the Ward Foundation needs a director for our pediatric healthcare initiative—someone who actually understands what it means to choose between rent and medical bills."
Lucia stood frozen, the magnitude of his words washing over her in slow motion. "Mr. Ward... I can't. I'm honored, truly, but I don't belong in a corporate boardroom. I'm a housekeeper."
"You exposed a multi-million-dollar corporate espionage conspiracy while wearing a maid's apron and holding a duster," Alex pointed out, a dry, amused smile touching his lips. "I think you’ll manage the boardroom just fine."
Before Lucia could formulate a coherent response, Alex reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a heavy, cream-colored envelope, placing it gently on the center of the kitchen table.
"That contains a formal offer letter," Alex said, his tone softening once more. "A salary that will ensure Sofi never has to worry about medication, housing, or security again. Full medical benefits, corporate housing in the city, and—if you're willing—a permanent position as my chief advisor on internal security."
Lucia looked at the envelope, then up at Alex. The sheer disbelief in her eyes slowly gave way to a profound, overwhelming wave of emotion. The heavy stone that had sat beneath her ribs for eleven days—the crushing weight of fear, debt, and survival—finally dissolved into nothingness.
"Why are you doing this, Alex?" she whispered, using his first name for the very first time.

Alex looked down at Sofi, who was happily brushing Benny’s ears with her pink crayon. Then he looked back at Lucia, his dark eyes reflecting a quiet, resonant truth.
"Because on Saturday morning, standing at that altar surrounded by three hundred liars, your daughter was the only person in the world who told me the truth," Alex said quietly. "And for the first time in my life, I've decided I want truth to be the foundation of whatever comes next."
