Chapter 6 - The Housekeeper's Secret

Martha stood in the doorway of the study, her frail hands trembling as she clutched a worn leather handbag against her chest. She looked past the federal agents, past my mother in handcuffs, and finally locked eyes with me. Tears streamed down her wrinkled cheeks.

"I tried to stop them, Daniel," Martha sobbed, her voice breaking. "I swear to God, I tried to stop them."

I stepped away from the desk and walked over to her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "I know you did, Martha. Come inside. You're safe now."

Martha stepped into the room, refusing to look at Margaret, who glared at her with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"She was just trying to protect the baby," Martha said, pointing a shaking finger at my mother. "Your mother found out that Emily had copied the financial records onto a flash drive and mailed a copy to a federal prosecutor in Atlanta. Margaret panicked. She called Dr. Hayes—the crooked town physician—and they induced Emily three months early right here in the master bedroom. They told her she was having a medical emergency, but it was a lie. They wanted the baby born under their control, and they wanted Emily silenced."

Elena stepped forward, her notebook open. "Can you testify to this, Martha?"

"I signed as a witness under duress," Martha wept, pulling a yellowed piece of paper from her handbag. "They told me if I said anything, they'd institutionalize me and take away my pension. But I kept a copy of the original birth log and Dr. Hayes's prescription notes. Here. Take it. Let these monsters burn."

Elena took the paper, glancing over it before nodding to Agent Miller. "Add conspiracy to commit murder and medical malpractice to the charges. Bring in Dr. Hayes immediately."

Margaret let out a low, feral sound of rage, lunging forward in her handcuffs, but the CID operatives easily restrained her, pushing her toward the door.

"You're destroying our family name!" Margaret screamed as they dragged her out into the hallway. "You're nothing without this family, Daniel! You hear me? NOTHING!"

The heavy oak doors closed behind them, cutting off her screeching voice. The silence that followed felt heavy, cleansing, and absolute.

I looked down at Martha, giving her a reassuring hug. "You did the right thing, Martha. Emily would be so proud of you."

"What do we do now, Ghost?" Elena asked, walking over with the micro-SD card and the ledger in her hand. "We have enough to put your mother and her co-conspirators away for decades. But there's still one loose end."

"Caleb," I said.

"Caleb," Elena agreed. "He cracked the moment we cuffed him in the hallway. He told us where they buried the original medical waste and where Dr. Hayes's clinic keeps the secondary patient files. But he also dropped one more piece of intel before we separated him from your mother."

May you like

"What intel?" I asked.

"There's someone else," Elena said grimly. "Someone in state government who greenlit the fake death certificate. Someone high up who was getting a cut of the pharmaceutical kickbacks. And they know federal agents are on this estate right now."
