Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

Two weeks later, I was alone in the quiet of my penthouse. The silence was no longer heavy—it was peaceful. But the past wasn't finished with me yet.
A letter arrived, hand-delivered. It wasn't from a lawyer. It was from Brendan.
Cassidy, I’m writing this from a motel outside the city. It’s quiet here. For the first time in my life, I have to buy my own groceries. I have to look at the price tag. I’m thinking about the way you used to look at me—not with hate, but with a kind of quiet disappointment I was too arrogant to understand.
I know you won't forgive me. I don't deserve it. But I need you to know something: Diane is blaming everyone but herself. She’s still convinced she’s the victim. I see it now. I see the monster she raised me to be.
I’m going to testify against her. I have the documents that will ensure she stays away for a long time. I’m not asking for money, or for you to drop the lawsuits. I’m just letting you know that the cycle is broken.
I held the letter in my hand for a long time. The baby kicked—a soft, gentle movement. She was growing, and in a few months, she would enter a world where her mother wasn't a victim, but a leader.

I took the letter and placed it into the shredder. There was no room left in my life for Brendan’s confessions or his remorse. The "poor, pregnant burden" was dead.
I stood up and walked to the window. The city lights sparkled below like diamonds. The audit was nearly complete, the company was profitable again, and for the first time, the future wasn't something that happened to me—it was something I was building, one day at a time.
