Chapter 9 - The Horizon Ahead

One Year Later.
The morning sun broke gently over the brick patio of 1402 Oakridge Estate Drive, casting a warm golden glow across the manicured lawns and lush gardens.
I stood in my kitchen, pouring fresh coffee into a porcelain mug.
I was wearing a brand-new, deep emerald silk robe—a gift to myself on the day my divorce decree was finalized.
Through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors of the breakfast room, I watched Cedric playing in the yard. He was laughing, tossing a tennis ball to our new rescue dog, his face bright and filled with pure, unburdened joy.
The air inside my house was clean. There were no black trash bags in the hallway. There were no deceitful promises whispered over the dining table. There was no shadow of betrayal hanging over our lives.
My phone chimed on the marble island. It was a message from Arthur Pendelton:
“Final receiver report approved by the state court today. Vance Creative Capital logged a record $4.1 million in net revenue for Q2. Congratulations, Elisa.”
I smiled, setting my coffee cup down.
I walked out onto the back porch, feeling the cool morning breeze against my skin. Cedric saw me, waved his little hand excitedly, and came running across the green lawn, throwing his arms around my waist.
“Morning, Mommy!” he beamed, looking up at me with his bright blue eyes.
“Good morning, my sweet boy,” I whispered, kissing his forehead and smoothing his soft hair.
I looked out over the estate—the home that my mother had protected for me, the sanctuary I had fought to keep, the life I had reclaimed with my own mind and strength.
Landen had thought he could slide a cream envelope across a counter and erase thirteen years of my life with a single lie. He had thought that being ruthless was the same thing as being powerful.
He had forgotten the most important rule of all:

Never play games with a woman who reads every word of the fine print.
I took my son’s hand, and together, we walked into the sunshine of our brand-new day.
