Chapter 4 - The Unmasking

The silence in the penthouse suite dropped like a lead weight.

Marcus blinked, his golden boy smile faltering for a fraction of a second. “What are you talking about, sweetheart? You look... strange.”

“I’m wondering, Marcus,” I said, my voice cutting through the expensive silence of the room like a scalpel, “if Voss Consulting LLC is registered in Delaware or the Caymans. Because when I ran the tax ID numbers this morning while you were downstairs eating breakfast, I noticed the corporate registry dissolved three years ago after a federal grand jury subpoena.”

Color instantly drained from Marcus’s face. The charming, doting husband vanished, replaced by a cornered predator. He snatched his hand off my shoulder and stepped back, his eyes darting toward the doorway.

“What kind of sick joke is this?” Marcus snapped, his voice rising in panic. “Have you been drinking?”

On the sofa, Celeste sprang to her feet, her glass of mimosa slipping from her fingers and shattering against the hardwood floor with a sharp crash. Her elegant posture evaporated, her face contorting into a mask of pure venom.

“You absolute little fool,” Celeste hissed, abandoning her fake mother-in-law accent entirely. “I told you she was too observant, Marcus! I told you we should have targeted the legal secretary in Cincinnati instead!”

“Shut up, Cecilia,” Marcus snarled, turning on her with a vicious glare before spinning back toward me. He lunged across the desk, his hands clawing for the manila folder containing the signed transfer papers. “Give me those deeds, Eleanor! Right now, or so help me god—!”

He didn't get to finish the sentence.

Crash.

The heavy double doors of Suite 402 didn't just open—they were blown inward with concussive force as four armed state troopers and federal marshals flooded the room in a disciplined, tactical wedge.

“FBI! State Fraud Division! Nobody move!” Investigator Vance roared, his weapon drawn and aimed squarely at Marcus’s chest.

Marcus froze, his hands hovering inches from the desk, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. Behind him, Cecilia stumbled backward until her spine hit the balcony glass, her hands flying up in instinctive surrender.

“Marcus Voss, alias Adrian Bennett,” Vance recited smoothly as he closed the distance between them, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Marcus’s wrists with a sharp, definitive snap. “You are under federal arrest for interstate wire fraud, identity theft, bigamy, and conspiracy to commit financial extortion.”

Marcus thrashed against the cuffs, his face turning a furious shade of purple as he glared at me with unadulterated hatred. “You set me up! You planned this the entire time!”

“I planned our wedding for six months, Marcus,” I replied calmly, standing up from the desk and buttoning my blazer. “You planned my financial execution for twelve. The only difference is that my math actually checks out.”

Two officers moved in to secure Cecilia, slapping cuffs onto her wrists as she shrieked obscenities that shattered the refined, upper-class illusion she had maintained for months.

“Cecilia Voss, alias Celeste Bennett,” Vance noted as he read her rights. “You’re joining your husband on the exact same charges. Turns out family businesses really do stick together.”

As they hauled Marcus and Cecilia toward the hallway, Marcus stopped at the threshold, turning his head back with a sneer. “You think you’ve won, Eleanor? Those properties are still tied up in local municipal code violations. Without my legal team, the city is going to demolish your father’s motel block within thirty days!”

“Let them try,” I said, walking over to the window and watching the morning light glint off the police cruisers waiting three stories below. “Municipal code violations are easy to fix when you actually know how to read a balance sheet.”
