Chapter 3 - The Ghost in His Empire

By nightfall, Chicago was burning, but not from gunfire.
It was burning from the sheer, unbridled wrath of Adrian Morgan.
In the subterranean command room beneath the Syndicate docks, twenty of Adrian’s top lieutenants and intelligence officers stood in a rigid, terrified line. Papers were scattered across the steel table, monitors flashed with red tracking alerts, and the air was thick with the scent of fear.
Marcus, Adrian’s chief enforcer and childhood friend, stepped forward, wiping cold sweat from his forehead.
"Boss... we’ve run every registry in the country," Marcus said, his voice trembling slightly. "Her social security number hasn't been pinged. Her passport hasn't been used at any international airport. Her bank accounts... Jesus, Boss, she didn't touch a single dime from the joint reserves."
Adrian sat in a leather chair, his suit jacket discarded, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He held a crystal glass of neat bourbon, his knuckles white against the glass.
"She spent months preparing this, didn't she?" Adrian asked softly.
Marcus swallowed hard. "Our cybersecurity team recovered a wiped backup from her personal laptop. Boss... she didn't just leave overnight. She began closing out her old life seven months ago. She quietly sold her small boutique shop, dissolved her personal credit cards, and paid off all her independent tax filings."
Seven months.
The realization hit Adrian like a physical blow to the chest.
Seven months ago was the exact night he had first brought Vanessa to the lake house in Michigan. He had come home at four in the morning, smelling of expensive perfume, and had lied straight to Eleanor’s face, claiming he was dealing with a hijacked shipment at the border.
He remembered how Eleanor had looked at him that night.
She hadn't cried. She hadn't screamed. She had simply stood by the kitchen island, poured him a glass of warm water, and kissed his cheek.
He had thought she believed him. He had thought he was clever.
In reality, that was the night she had buried him.
"She let me lie to her every single day for seven months," Adrian whispered, his glass shattering in his grip as he squeezed too hard. Bourbon and blood dripped onto the steel table. "She let me think I was fooling her... while she was quietly erasing herself from my life."
"Boss, your hand—" Marcus began, reaching for a towel.
"Find her!" Adrian roared, slamming his bloody fist onto the table so hard the monitors shook. "I don't care if you have to tear down every city in this country! I don't care if you have to bribe every federal marshal from here to Miami! Find my wife!"
"She's legally divorced from you, Adrian," Marcus said cautiously, taking a dangerous risk. "The court filings are ironclad. If we launch a full mob dragnet across state lines, the FBI will use it as cause to hit our front businesses—"
"I don't give a damn about the businesses!" Adrian snarled, standing up, his dark eyes wide with an unhinged, desperate rage no one had ever seen in him before. "She thinks she can just sign a piece of paper and walk away from me?! I am Adrian Morgan! Nothing in this city leaves me unless I say so!"
Marcus bowed his head. "We’ll expand the search to the West Coast. But Boss... there’s something else."
Marcus pulled a manila folder from under his arm and laid it on the table.
"What is that?"
"It was tucked inside her personal safe at the mansion," Marcus said softly. "The safe she left unlocked for you to find."
Adrian reached out with a trembling, blood-stained hand and opened the folder.
Inside was a medical document from Saint Mary’s Hospital, dated four months ago.
Adrian’s eyes scanned down the page until they hit the bold black text at the bottom:
PATIENT: ELEANOR MORGAN
PREGNANCY TEST: POSITIVE
ESTIMATED DUE DATE: DECEMBER 14
The air rushed out of Adrian’s lungs. The room around him spun into complete darkness.
She wasn't just running away alone.

She was carrying his child. His heir. The only thing in the entire world he had ever wanted more than power.
And she had taken the child away before he ever knew it existed.
