Chapter 8 - The Trial of Stone and Silk

By 1:00 AM, the storm had finally cleared, leaving behind a sky of crisp, diamond-bright stars over Lake Michigan.

The basement under the north wing of the Moretti estate was cold and silent.

Julian sat bound to his chair, staring at the floor-to-ceiling digital monitors mounted on the concrete wall. On the screens, he had watched the entire live feed of Wharf 9—he had seen Falcone’s empire collapse in ninety seconds, he had seen the Moretti colors raised over the harbor docks, and he had realized that his three years of plotting had ended in absolute ruin.

The heavy steel door clicked open.

I walked into the room alone, holding two warm cups of coffee in my hands. I set one cup on the small wooden table beside Julian and pulled up a simple metal chair, sitting down opposite my brother.

Julian didn't look up. His eyes were red, hollow, and filled with a deep, silent despair.

"It’s done," I said quietly.

"I saw," Julian rasped, his voice barely audible. "You destroyed him in an hour."

"Falcone is in federal custody," I explained, taking a slow sip of my coffee. "The harbor is secured. The council has formally named me supreme head of the Moretti assets."

Julian let out a dry, bitter laugh, shaking his head. "So what now, Adrian? Are you going to shoot me in the head and throw my body in the lake? Complete the execution?"

I looked at my brother—the boy I had taught to throw a baseball on the lawn outside thirty years ago, the boy our father had trusted to handle the family’s legal legacy.

"No," I said.

Julian blinked, his head snapping up in genuine shock. "What?"

"I’m not going to kill you, Julian," I said, my voice rich with a quiet, undeniable authority. "Death is too easy. You would be a memory in five minutes, and I would have blood on my hands that my daughter would have to carry."

"Then what are you going to do with me?" Julian stammered, his lips trembling.

"You are going to sign over every piece of real estate, every stock holding, and every offshore account you stole from this family over the last seven years," I stated flatly, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from my coat. "Everything will be transferred into an irrevocable trust for Emma Romano and Sofia."

Julian stared at the documents, his jaw slacking. "You’re giving my entire fortune... to a maid?"

"I’m giving it to Michael Romano’s daughter," I corrected. "And once you sign, you will be escorted to a private airstrip in Indiana. You will be placed on a plane to a remote town in northern Alaska. You will live under a fake name, on a modest stipend, with two guards monitoring your every move until the day you die. You will never see Chicago again. You will never see a suit again. And if you ever step foot near my family again, Dante will handle you without asking my permission."

Julian stared at me for three long minutes. He looked for a flash of anger, a hint of weakness, or a spark of hesitation in my eyes.

He found none.

Slowly, with shaking, bruised fingers, Julian took the silver pen I offered him.

He signed his name twenty-four times across the crisp white pages, surrendering his freedom, his fortune, and his legacy in silence.

When he finished, he set the pen down, tears finally spilling down his hollow cheeks.

"Adrian..." Julian whispered as two guards stepped forward to unbind his arms. "Do you think... do you think Elena and Claire can see us?"

I stood up, picking up the signed documents, looking down at him one last time.

"I think Elena is happy," I said softly. "Because tonight, Claire’s room is filled with laughter again."

I turned and walked out of the basement, leaving my brother to his fate.
