Chapter 5 - The Bond and The Threat

The morning sun broke over Wall Street West in downtown Seattle in sharp, cold rays of light.

The top floor of the Drake Tower was an imposing fortress of dark glass and chrome. At 9:00 AM, the twelve members of the executive board gathered around the oval marble table for the emergency session called by Eleanor Drake.

Eleanor sat at the far end of the table. At sixty-five, she was an imposing figure—clad in a tailored Chanel tweed suit, her silver hair pulled into a flawless chignon, her eyes cold as arctic ice. Beside her sat Richard Vance, a cutthroat board member who had been plotting a hostile takeover of Drake AI for three years.

"Griffin is ten minutes late," Eleanor announced to the room, her voice dripping with artificial sympathy. "A clear indication that his personal entanglements have compromised his executive focus. As presented in the draft press report circulated this morning, his secret relationship with the lead architect of the Morrison Project presents an intolerable ethical liability—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Griffin Drake walked into the room.

He didn't walk in alone.

Dressed in a sharp, dark navy suit that highlighted her sleek elegance and undeniable strength, Sloan walked beside him, holding a leather portfolio. Behind them stood Marcus and three senior corporate attorneys from Gibson & Dunn.

Eleanor’s eyes snapped toward Sloan, a flash of pure, murderous surprise darting across her aged features before she masked it behind a cold sneer.

"Julian," Eleanor said sharply, addressing her son. "This is an executive board session. Unaffiliated contractors—and former acquaintances—are not permitted."

"Sit down, Eleanor," Griffin said softly.

He didn't raise his voice, but the tone carried such lethal weight that two board members sitting near the front instinctively sat up straighter.

Griffin took his place at the head of the table. Sloan stood directly at his right shoulder, cool, composed, and unyielding.

"You called this emergency meeting to review my fitness as CEO based on leaks regarding my personal life," Griffin stated, placing his hands flat on the marble table. "Allow me to clarify the facts before you cast your votes."

Griffin gestured to the large presentation screen on the wall.

"Nine years ago," Griffin said, his gaze locking onto Eleanor’s pale face, "Ms. Sloan Prescott left Seattle due to direct, illegal extortion executed by a member of this board. She was threatened with fabricated legal action against her family firm if she did not sever contact with me. At the time of her departure, she was pregnant with my children."

A loud murmur swept through the board members. Richard Vance frowned, shifting uncomfortably in his leather chair.

"This is absurd!" Eleanor sneered, slamming her hand against the table. "Fabricated lies from a gold-digger trying to secure a trust fund for her—"

"I have not asked Griffin Drake for a single dollar in nine years, Mrs. Drake," Sloan interrupted, her voice ringing clear, powerful, and precise through the silent room.

She opened her portfolio, pulling out a series of notarized documents and throwing them into the center of the table.

"For nine years, I built Prescott Architectural Solutions independently," Sloan continued, staring down Eleanor without a single flicker of fear. "My firm won the Morrison Center contract through a blind design submission process audited by three third-party engineering firms—months before Griffin Drake's venture firm even acquired equity in the project. The paper trail is clean, audited, and flawless."

Sloan stepped forward, placing her hands on the table, leaning slightly toward Eleanor.

"Furthermore, the financial records your legal team used nine years ago to intimidate my father have been fully analyzed by federal forensic accountants," Sloan added smoothly. "They reveal that the embezzlement charges threatened against my father's firm were actually orchestrated by a shell company owned by you, Eleanor."

The boardroom erupted into chaos.

Richard Vance’s face turned white as sheet paper. He looked at Eleanor, then at the thick legal documents Sloan had laid on the table.

"This is a private family matter!" Eleanor hissed, her hands shaking as she stood up. "Griffin, you are allowing this woman to destroy your legacy—"

"My legacy is sitting at home drawing blueprints," Griffin said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying finality. "My daughters, Hazel and Iris Drake."

He stood up, stepping beside Sloan, his arm coming around her waist, pulling her firmly against his side in a public, unbreakable stance of unity.

"Effective immediately," Griffin announced, looking at the board, "I am exercising my sixty-percent voting control to remove Eleanor Drake and Richard Vance from this board. Federal investigators from the SEC have already been served with the financial evidence regarding your shell companies. You have ten minutes to clear your offices before security escorts you from the building."

Eleanor stared at her son, her mouth opening and closing in soundless shock. She looked at Sloan, seeing not the frightened twenty-four-year-old girl she had bullied nine years ago, but an invincible woman backed by the most powerful man in the city.

Defeated, humiliated, and facing federal prosecution, Eleanor gripped her pearl necklace, turned on her heel, and walked out of the boardroom in absolute silence.
