Chapter 4 - The Hunt for the Truth

We fled the glass house under the cover of a moonless night. The mountain road was a ribbon of black ice, and the SUV Elias drove was packed with drives, ledgers, and enough supplies to disappear for years. But as we wound our way down into the valley, the headlights of two black sedans appeared in the rearview mirror. They didn't have their lights on; they were tracking our thermal signature.
"They're not trying to stop us," Caleb growled, his eyes locked on the road. "They're trying to corral us."
I looked at the silver bracelet. For the first time, I pushed on the small, hidden clasp my mother had pointed out a thousand times in my dreams. The silver band clicked, and a faint, holographic projection shimmered in the air—a map of the state, but covered in pulsing nodes of light. My father's name was at the center of every node.
"They've been monitoring the bracelet," I realized, the blood running cold in my veins. "Every step we took in that house... they were watching."
"We have to go to the source," I told Caleb, my voice suddenly clear. I realized now that hiding had only made us prey. "If they want the legacy, I’ll give it to them—but on my terms. We go to the Vance Foundation headquarters. If I’m a synthesized experiment, then I’m the only one with the override code."

The chase through the Cascades was brutal. We lost one of the sedans when Elias executed a perfect drift that sent them crashing into the ravine, but the second one stayed on our tail like a shadow. My heart was hammering a rhythm of war. I wasn't just Emma Brooks anymore. I was the secret they had been trying to bury for seventeen years.
As we crossed the state line, I looked at the bracelet. The symbols began to shift, rearranging themselves into a language I realized I could read. It wasn't just a map; it was a manual. My mother had left me the instructions to dismantle the very thing that had created me. We weren't running away anymore. We were hunting the architects. I grabbed the steering wheel, my grip firm, and looked at Caleb. "Tell them to keep coming," I said. "I’m tired of being the secret."
