Chapter 4 - The Conspiracy at Newbury Street

The consultation room went dead silent.
Detective Miller lowered his handcuffs, stepping toward the table where Chloe was laying out dozens of printed medical forms, consent agreements, and financial ledger sheets.
“What do you mean, intentional?” Detective Miller asked, his investigator instincts kicking in immediately.
Chloe pointed a trembling finger at a specific document near the top of the stack.
“Three months ago, our clinic director, Dr. Alan Sterling, was facing federal investigation for financial embezzlement and illegal embryonic trafficking,” Chloe explained quickly, her voice laced with anxiety. “To cover his tracks, he needed to shuffle high-value client profiles away from public audits. Wealthy families—like the Millers, who paid a quarter-million-dollar premium for bespoke genetic selection—were scheduled for implantation on the exact same morning as standard insurance-tier couples like the Bennetts.”
Daniel felt the floor drop out from beneath him. “Are you saying Sterling switched our embryos on purpose?”
“He swapped the storage tags,” Chloe nodded grimly. “He knew that if an audit hit, tracing a misplaced embryo in a standard family file would take months to unravel, burying his financial fraud beneath a mountain of civil paternity disputes. He didn't care whose child went to whose home. He only cared about saving his own skin.”
Noah looked up at his father, his voice barely a whisper. “So... the baby Claire gave birth to tonight... really isn't ours?”
Daniel knelt down, pulling his son into a tight, fierce embrace. “No, buddy. But she’s still an innocent little girl who needs our love. And our real sister... she’s right down the hall.”
Detective Miller turned to Chloe, his expression turning stone-cold. “Do you have signed confessions or digital trails proving Dr. Sterling orchestrated this?”
“Everything is right here,” Chloe tapped the hard drive resting inside the cardboard box. “Emails, server logs, bank transfers from Sterling’s offshore accounts to the clinic’s database admin. It’s an open-and-shut racketeering case.”
“Good,” Detective Miller said, clipping his handcuffs back onto his belt. He looked at Daniel, then at Dr. Vale. “Then here is how this is going to play out. Mr. Bennett, I am suspending formal arrest pending a complete federal review of the Newbury Street Clinic conspiracy. You will remain in this hospital under staff supervision, and you will not attempt to switch any more babies.”
Daniel let out a long, shuddering breath of profound relief. “Thank you, Sergeant.”
“Don’t thank me yet,” Detective Miller warned. “Because the hardest part of this entire nightmare hasn't even begun.”

“What do you mean?” Noah asked.
“I mean,” the detective said heavily, “we have to go upstairs and tell Claire Bennett—a woman who just underwent major abdominal surgery—that the child she believes is her daughter belongs to another family, and that her biological child was carried by a complete stranger.”
