Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The revelation hung in the air between them, sharp as broken glass.
Marco did not look surprised. That was the most chilling part—the realization that the suspicion had lived somewhere in the dark corners of his own mind for weeks, waiting for someone with enough courage to drag it into the light.
"Serena," Marco said, more to himself than to Mara.
"She reviewed every sedative increase," Mara said, ticking off the points on her fingers. "She coordinated Dr. Voss's visits. She made sure the night-shift security was rotated away from the east wing every Tuesday and Thursday between two and four in the morning—the exact window when Luca's pain spikes were documented. She wasn't just managing his care, Mr. Falcone. She was managing his erasure."
Voss gave a desperate, muffled grunt, nodding vigorously and pressing his bound wrists toward Marco as if offering a trade: I'll confess, I'll give you everything, just don't let him shoot me.
"Untie his mouth," Marco commanded. "Keep the hands."
Mara knelt and yanked the towel from Voss's mouth. The doctor slumped forward, coughing raggedly, spattering the rug with saliva and desperate breaths.
"I didn't want to do it!" Voss sobbed, his professional arrogance completely shattered. "She threatened me! Serena had records—financial transfers from offshore accounts tied to my medical licensing board violations from ten years ago! She said if I didn't formulate the toxin and oversee the administration, she would ruin me, strip my credentials, and hand me to the federal prosecutor!"
"And the money?" Marco asked, his voice a lethal whisper. "How much did she pay you?"
"Nothing!" Voss cried, shaking his head. "It wasn't about money for me—it was blackmail! She wanted him gone because of the prenuptial trust! Under Massachusetts law, if Luca survived until his ninth birthday next month, the bulk of your shipping empire and your mother's estate vests entirely in his name, with you as trustee. But if he dies... the primary beneficiary clause reverts to his legal guardian."
Marco stood up slowly. The implications settled over him like falling ash. Serena wasn't just a cold stepmother; she was an architect of corporate and domestic homicide, calculating every percentage point of an estate worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

"She's downstairs," Marco said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "In the study. Waiting for Voss to report that the final dose had taken effect."
"Then let's go give her an update," Mara said.
